Abstract

Designing temporary cities is a study of the design and physical planning of five temporary cities. The purpose was to discuss and note the important questions to be considered, when designing the outdoor environment in temporary cities to create as good an environment for the visitor as possible.
The five cities I have chosen are among the most famous ones in Scandinavia, and they represent different kinds of temporary cities. This was a deliberate choice to achieve diverse research material, and with that a broad view of what the planning stage generally looks like. Study of the cities has been done through interviews with the people responsible for the design and/or physical planning of each city. In my study, I have come to the conclusion that there are several similarities in the thoughts behind them, even though they are quite different. One of the foremost similarities is the ambition that people should meet and get to know each other. To achieve this they have worked in different ways, and to a greater or lesser extent the planning and design tools.
My conclusion in this thesis is that the structure, the identity and the substance of the city, are most important to think about, and that is where the foremost similarities between the cities I have studied can be found. Even though they are working on the basis of different purposes, they have done it according to the same principles. For example, by bringing out the paths and nodes, by accentuating events and activities that occur in the city and creating different rooms and experiences.
In the thesis I have applied different theories of city planning and ethnology. Above all, the theories of city planning turned out to be more applicable to temporary cities than I earlier thought. Many of the theories of city planning are applicable to temporary cities, but useful reference material is not restricted only to this area. Temporary cities can for example offer possibilities for experimenting and don't require the same sustainability of materials and structure. That is what makes a temporary city feel more special, more exclusive and more creative.

Gestaltning av tillfälliga städer är en undersökning av fem
tillfälliga städers gestaltning och fysiska planering.
Syftet var att resonera kring och uppmärksamma vad
som är viktigt att tänka på i gestaltningen av utemiljön
i tillfälliga städer för att skapa en så bra miljö för
besökaren som möjligt.
De fem städerna jag valde är bland de mest kända i
Skandinavien, och de representerar olika sorters
tillfälliga städer. Detta var ett medvetet val för att få
en bred fördelning och därmed en god överblick över
hur planeringen generellt ser ut. Undersökningen av
dem har skett genom intervjuer med de ansvariga för
gestaltningen och/eller planeringen för respektive
stad. I min undersökning har jag kommit fram till att
det fi nns många likheter i tankarna bakom dem, trots
att de är ganska olika. En av dem främsta likheterna
är tanken att människor ska kunna träffas och lära
känna varandra, men för att uppnå detta har man
arbetat på olika sätt och mer eller mindre genom att
använda sig av stadens utformning och gestaltning.
Min slutsats i arbetet är att stadens struktur, identitet
och innehåll är det viktigaste att tänka på, och det
är här de främsta likheterna mellan städerna jag
undersökt fi nns. Även om man arbetar utifrån olika
syften, har man gjort det efter samma principer. T.ex.
genom att framhäva stråk och mötesplatser, att betona
saker och aktiviteter som sker i staden och att skapa
olika rum och upplevelser.
I arbetet har jag använt mig av olika teorier inom
stadsplanering och etnologi. Framförallt visade sig
teorierna inom stadsplanering vara mer aktuella
för tillfälliga städer än jag tidigare trott. Många av
stadsplaneringsteorierna är användbara och bra att
tillämpa på tillfälliga städer, men det fi nns även andra
saker som är bra att använda sig av när det är just
tillfälligt. Tillfälliga städer kan t.ex. erbjuda större
möjligheter för experimentering och kräver inte
samma hållbarhet på material och struktur. Det är det
som kan göra att en tillfällig stad känns mer speciell,
mer exklusiv och mer kreativ.
