Abstract

This Bachelor’s thesis examines optical illusions, their effect on perceived spaciousness and how they can be used as a design tool in order to face challenges within landscape architecture. This is carried out as a literature survey within perception, optical illusions and the history of landscape architecture. Subsequently, experiments in a model are used to concretize the findings from the literature survey. The first section of this study presents essential knowledge within visual perception, optical illusions and how illusions have been applied in architecture as well as within urban densification. The results of this study conclude historical examples of how strong perspectives, forced perspectives and perceived spaciousness and enclosure are optical illusions used in order to optimize the experience of space. The optical illusions are tested and photographed as four principles in a cardboard model. The final results confirm that they do have an impact on perceived spaciousness. Only one experiment out of six shows an insufficient result. This thesis argues that the optical illusions that were tested can be used as a design principle for spatial distortion, linking research in perception to aesthetics and design in order to face challenges within landscape architecture. The final section of the thesis discusses if and how the design principles can be applied on the landscape within landscape architecture.
