Abstract

The purpose of this master thesis is to design climate change adapted recreation close to the water in Trondheim in the form of a promenade, by investigating how flood water can be stored whilst recreational and historical values are strengthened and preserved. The promenade will run through an industrial harbor and connect the city centre with the fjord, together with filling the missing link between exciting recreational paths. Today the residents are given few opportunities to reach the water surrounding the city and the most central parts lack recreation close to the fjord. This thesis therefore aim to explore how a harbour area placed on the most central fjord bank can be developed from a barrier into a place for people. Around the world, harbours are one of many examples of industrial areas that today face post-industrial transformation. Their often central and attractive locations make them desirable to develop as production moves out of the city center. In this work, we present how a promenade can ensure that the shoreline is kept as public space and how that can affect the citizens health in a positive way. The Norwegians lack in everyday exercise and just a short walk for 30 minutes would improve their health. In the theory section, theories of the harbor as urban space are presented. We also present solutions on the flooding problem the area faces. The last part of the theory section presents how public spaces can be designed to function as promenades.

In the thesis, we developed an analysis to help us divide the harbour into smaller, readable areas. The result from the analysis was then conjoined with parts from the theory. The synthesis is the design process, and here we present possible stretches of the promenade together with how the theory developed into design principles. Finally, the proposal is presented, showing the entire stretch of the promenade together with four detailed parts representing one design principle each.
