Abstract

Hästantalet i Sverige ökar, ridsporten är utbredd och populär bland olika åldersgrupper och områden. I takt med att antal nötkreatur i landet minskar, fyller hästen en allt viktigare del i arbetet att hålla efter i beteshagar och se till att jordbruk hålls igång genom foderproduktion. Syftet med arbetet är att skapa en förståelse kring hästhållarens tankar om hur hästen fungerar som betesdjur, samt vad hästhållaren tycker att hästen har för betydelse i deras liv. Arbetet har en samhällsvetenskaplig, kvalitativ inriktning och en intervjustudie bland hästhållare i Uppsala län har genomförts. Resultatet visar på att hästen ofta har en stor betydelse i de intervjuades liv som sträcker sig utanför betydelsen som hobby eller arbetsredskap. Djurets mångsidiga användningsområden kan vidare bidra till en positiv utveckling i och med att landsbygden hålls levande. Resultatet visar även på att det finns delade åsikter om hur bra hästen fungerar som betesdjur, men att det ofta är hagens storlek samt eventuellt växlande mellan olika betande djurslag som avgör hur markerna ser ut. Slutligen visar resultatet att det finns flera hinder som begränsar de intervjuade i deras hästverksamhet. Dessa hinder beror ofta på upplevda fördomar och kommer från personer och organisationer i omgivningen.

The horse population in Sweden is increasing and the equestrian sport is widespread and popular among different age groups and areas. As the number of cattle in the country decreases, the horse is becoming an increasingly important part in terms of grazing pastures and ensuring that we have an open agricultural landscape. The purpose of this work is to create an understanding of horse holder’s thoughts about the horse as a grazing animal, as well as how big importance the horse holders think that the animals have in their lives. The work is a social science study, with a qualitative approach. During the course of the work an interview study including horse holders in Uppsala County has been carried out. The result show that the horse is often of great importance in the horse holder’s life and the horse means more than just a hobby or a work. The diverse uses of the animal can further contribute to a positive development in keeping rural areas alive. The result also show that there is difference of opinion about the horse as a grazing animal, but that it is often the size of the pen and the level of other grazing animals in the pen that determines the character of the grazing ground. The results finally show that horse owners experience obstacles that limit them in their activities with the horses. These obstacles often depend on preconceptions of the horse and come from people and organizations.
