Abstract

Examensarbetet syftar till att föreslå en gestaltning som tydliggör och framhäver naturvärden i ett naturreservat, för att på så vis förstärka besökares naturupplevelser. Syftet är även att tillgängliggöra friluftslivet och därigenom motivera till ett ökat användande av ett naturreservat. Arbetet utgår från Östa naturreservat som ligger i Heby kommun i nordvästra Uppland.

Det finns idag en problematik där otillgängliga naturreservat blir exkluderande för många besökare. Genom gestaltning har vi arbetat för att främja ett inkluderande friluftsliv där alla människor kan vistas i naturen på samma villkor. Ett inkluderande friluftsliv ställer krav på god tillgänglighet och användbarhet i naturområden. Naturområden möjliggör rekreation vilket medför naturupplevelser och en ökad förståelse för naturen. I arbetet låg ett stort fokus på att bibehålla känslan av orörd natur, eftersom gestaltningar i naturen påverkar upplevelsen av naturen.

Arbetet inleddes med intervjuer för att ta del av information från två personer med stor kunskap om Östa naturreservat. Genom platsbesök och en landskapskaraktärsanalys fick vi en bild av reservatets förutsättningar. Landskapskaraktärsanalysen identifierade naturreservatets naturmiljöer och vilka natur- och upplevelsevärden som var lämpliga och motiverade att tillgängliggöra genom gestaltning. Slutligen studerade vi referensprojekt för att inspireras av projekt där natur och arkitektur samspelar med varandra.

Gestaltningen var arbetets främsta metod och ledde fram till ett gestaltningsförslag. Gestaltningen utgick från ett koncept där arkitekturen inspirerades av och underordnades naturen men samtidigt upplevdes som ett nutida tillägg som kompletterade naturreservatet. Konceptet applicerades på programpunkter med ursprung i inventeringen och analysen. Programmet var vägledande för undersökande skisser över form och proportion, färg och material samt över vilka funktioner gestaltningen skulle fylla.

Genom gestaltningsprocessen skapades förslaget Hitta ut!. Förslaget presenterar en entréplats som fungerar som utgångspunkt till Östa naturreservat och som länkar samman målpunkter i två av reservatets karaktärsområden, stranden och myrmarken. Gestaltningen förstärker utvalda natur- och upplevelsevärden i reservatet, och tar fasta på utblickar och vegetationens öppen- och slutenhet. I karaktärsområdet myrmark gestaltades en spång och ett fågeltorn. På spången tar gestaltningen fasta på vegetationens växlande karaktär och vid fågeltornet är betraktandet och utblickar i fokus. Vid karaktärsområdet strand gestaltades en yta för sociala aktiviteter och en utkiksplattform som framhäver utblickar över vattnet.

Förslaget möjliggör för fler människor att besöka Östa naturreservat, vilket påverkar upplevelsen av reservatet positivt. Gestaltningen ökar förutsättningarna för ett inkluderande friluftsliv och ger fler besökare möjlighet att uppleva och uppskatta naturen.

With this thesis, we propose a design to clarify and emphasize the values and experiences of nature to enhance visitors’ experiences. The aim is also to make outdoor life accessible, thereby motivating increased use of a nature reserve. This thesis is based on the Östa nature reserve located in Heby municipality in the northwest part of Uppland.

Today, there is a problem when inaccessible nature reserves become exclusionary to visitors. However, there is a political will to improve accessibility within natural areas. In this thesis we have worked towards an inclusive outdoor life, which requires a high degree of accessibility in nature areas. The design of outdoor facilities affect the visitors’ experience of the natural area. Humans prefer surroundings where nature dominates the built environment in comparison to natural surroundings with human interference. Therefore, the design should imitate the natural settings to maintain the feeling of untouched nature.

We began the thesis by interviewing two people with extensive knowledge of the Östa nature reserve. Through inventory and a landscape character assessment (LCA), the requirements within the nature reserve became clear. The LCA identified various characteristics, values and experiences of the nature within the Östa nature reserve and which of these values that were appropriate to make accessible through design. We also visited reference projects where nature and design interact.

The main method was the design process which started with a concept where the architecture was to be inspired by and subordinated to the nature. Together with the concept, a design program guided us through investigating sketches of shape and proportion, colour and material as well as which functions the design should provide. The proposal’s colour scheme and material were inspired by the nature in the nature reserve in order to integrate the design with the surroundings.

Through the design process, we created the proposal Hitta ut! (Find out!). The proposal highlights selected values and experiences of the nature and focuses on prominent sight lines and variations in the vegetation. Hitta ut! presents an entrance that serves as a starting point to the Östa nature reserve. The entrance links two of the nature reserve’s excursion goals, a bird tower at a marshland and a waterfront, and increase the accessibility to each place through design.
A board walk leads from the entrance through the marshland toward the bird tower, where visitors’ can enjoy great sight lines and the atmosphere is prodigious and calm. At the entrance area, another board walk lead visitors toward the waterfront, where we created room for social activities and a platform that emphasized the sight lines over the water.
By focusing on natural values and nature experiences, this thesis contributes to an increased understanding for design in natural surroundings and how landscape architects can work for a more inclusive and accessible outdoor life.
