Abstract

Striving towards a socially sustainable city, the need for experiential public spac-es, supporting social activities and possibilities for people to meet, is held a key factor. A part of this, when planning for both the existing city and new develop-ments, is the strategic placement of small meeting points, to add variation, greenery, possibilities for activity or seclusion, as well as to strengthen orientation and identity of place. The micro-park, as defined by the city of Örebro, is the response to the need of a concept and means to facilitate this process. By using a comprehensible name like micro-park, which is understandable to planners, decision makers as well as the public, communication is furthered. This is crucial, as the micro-park, being either a permanent or temporary structure, has got a main purpose of being a tool for dialogue. Communication adapted to the users is of significance to succeed in strengthening the public involvement and sense of participation in the planning process, which are explicit goals of today’s urban planning. This thesis shows that the four biggest Swedish cities, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Uppsala, seem to lack concepts and planning tools for the smallest parks and places, demanded by current planning ideas. One side effect is the creation and use of undefined professional slang expressions, which subsequently reach the public, risking perpetuating a professional-laymen gap.
