Abstract

For trade and industry development is it important with well-developed and cost-effective transportation. This is also important for Sweden to achieve the climate targets. A contribution to this is utilization of vehicles with higher gross weight, so-called High Capacity Transport (HCT-vehicles). The main limits of HCT-vehicles, according to Trafikverket, are bridges and roads with poor construction that cannot handle the gross weight increase. Because of the infrastructure limitations, a new gross weight class which allows a gross weight of 74 tonnes (BK4) is required. The new BK4-road network will be limited to the roads and bridges that Trafikverket believes withstand the gross weight increase.

The purpose of this study was to analyse 1) how a two-parted vehicle fleet with 74-tonne vehicles and conventional roundwood trucks with different availabilities on the road network affect each other’s route opportunities, and 2) how a limited BK4-road network affects the 74-tonne vehicle regarding economic and environmental aspects.

Optimization of three different BK4-roads, Trafikverkets and two expanded, was analysed with various rate of 74 tonnes vehicles. Optimizations with only 64- and 74-tonne vehicle was made as reference cases. The optimization was done in two subsequent weeks.

Analysis show that Trafikverket BK4-road network give great limitations in routing capabilities for 74 tonne vehicles. It can give up to 2,0% higher costs and -1,0% higher carbon emissions than of a conventional 64 tonne vehicle fleet. A more extended limited BK4-road network provides up to -1,1% reduced costs and -1,0% reduced carbon emissions, but if the proportion of 74 tonnes vehicles is too high for the current BK4-road network, it can have the opposite effect. Therefore, is it important that the rate of 74 tonnes vehicles is balanced with current BK4-road network. Extended analysis which observe other regions and situations is required to generalize the results.
