Abstract

Det finns idag en osäkerhet inom politik, ekonomi såväl som i fråga om klimatförändringar vilket har förändrat människors syn på världen och på sin egen roll i den. Arkitektens roll är viktig i mötet med dessa utmaningar. De traditionella verktygen inom arkitekturpraktiken har en oförmåga att hantera detta vilket har givit upphov till tillfälliga projekt som väcker diskussion om aktuella samhällsfrågor som påverkar den byggda miljön. Som en del av det här examensarbetet har vi blivit erbjudna av Göteborgs stad att gestalta en av 18 pop-up parker som ska pryda Avenyn sommaren 2016 som en del av Gothenburg Green World 2016. Nyckelord för utställningen är lust, inspiration, hållbarhet och delaktighet. I vårt bidrag till utställningen ville vi använda tillfällig arkitektur som ett medel för att uppmuntra göteborgarna till att delta i diskussionen om samhällsutvecklingen. Arbetet innehåller en förstudie som presenterar bakgrunden till den samhällskritik som finns i tillfällig arkitektur och varför samhällskritiska arkitekter hittar ett uttrycksmedel i tillfällig arkitektur. Som en del av förstudien har vi studerat fyra internationella och fyra svenska kontor som har ett kritiskt förhållningssätt och rör sig bortom den traditionella arkitekturpraktiken. De använder sig av tillfällig arkitektur som ett verktyg för att föra en dialog om de politiska och sociala krafter som formar den byggda miljön samt samhället i stort. Förstudien fungerar som en bas för ett gestaltningsförslag av en pop-up park.
Gestaltningen av pop-up parken utgår från idén om att uppmuntra göteborgarna till att delta i diskussionen om segregation och integration i det urbana rummet och låta dem bidra med sina idéer om hur de tycker att deras stad ska arbeta med denna utmaning. Uppresta brädor i olika längder är placerade i parken och vid varje bräda hänger en penna som besökare kan använda för att skriva sina idéer om hur man kan skapa en mer integrerad stad. Starka och klara färger gör parken synlig och ska ge en positiv känsla trots allvaret i ämnesvalet. Vegetationen i parken är färdig ängsmatta. Ängen har en vild, fri och öppen karaktär som passar konceptet. Dessutom gynnar ängen den biologiska mångfalden och på så sätt den ekologiska hållbarheten. Avenyn är en offentlig plats som lockar besökare från hela staden. Genom att lyfta ämnet segregation/integration i denna kontext öppnar vi upp för en vidare grupp medborgare, som genom aktivt deltagande får en ökad medvetenhet om hur denna fråga berör deras stad och då förhoppningsvis vill driva frågan vidare.

There is growing uncertainty in politics, economy as well as it is concerning climate change, which have affected the perception of how people view the world and their own role in it. The architect's role will be important in facing these challenges. The traditional tools of architecture practice have an inability to handle this, which has given rise to temporary projects that evokes a discussion about current societal issues that affect the built environment. As part of this thesis we have been commissioned by the City of Gothenburg to design one of 18 pop-up parks that will adorn “the Avenue” in the summer of 2016 as part of Gothenburg Green World 2016. Keywords for the exhibition are Lust, Inspiration, Sustainability and Participation. In our contribution to the event we wanted to use temporary architecture to encourage the citizens of Gothenburg to participate in the discussion about community development processes. The thesis contains a pre-study that present the background to the social criticism contained in temporary architecture and why socially critical architects find a means of expression in temporary architecture. As part of the pre-study there is a study of four international and four Swedish firms that relate critically to and move beyond the traditional architectural practice. They use temporary architecture as a method to conduct a dialog on the political and social forces that shape the built environment but also society at large. The pre-study then serves as a basis for a design proposal of a pop-up park. The design is based on the idea to encourage the citizens of Gothenburg to participate in the discussion about segregation and integration in the urban space and let them share their suggestions on how they feel their city can work with this challenge. Raised boards of different lengths are placed in the park, and at each hang a pencil that visitors can use to write their ideas about how to create a more integrated city. Strong, bright colours make the park visible and inspire to a positive feeling, despite the seriousness of the choice of subject. The vegetation in the park is complete meadow carpet. A meadow has a wild, free and open character that is suitable for the concept. Moreover meadow favours biodiversity and with it also the ecological sustainability. The Avenue is a public street that attracts people from all over the city. By underlining the issue of segregation/integration in this context, we open up to a wider group of citizens that through active participation will become more aware on how this issue relates to their city and hopefully then will bring the debate further.
