Abstract

Då många städer är inne i en fas med tillväxt och byggande av allt högre byggnader så blir det viktigare att skapa medvetenhet om hur vi upplever miljöerna runt höga byggnader. Jag vill med detta arbete utveckla kunskapen om miljön runt höga hus genom att uppleva, undersöka och analysera. Det som händer i mötet mellan gaturummet och de höga husen. Hur platsen ser ut och hur den upplevs från en människas perspektiv.
Detta examensarbete handlar om upplevelsen av den omgivande miljön kring tre höga byggnader i London, men också hur upplevelserna av dessa platser kan förmedlas vidare. Syftet med arbetet var att undersöka miljön runt höga byggnader samt om byggnadens höjd påverkar själva upplevelsen. Ett mål med arbetet var att beskriva och analysera min upplevelse av en plats och sedan förmedla upplevelsen i form av en utställning. Examensarbetet består därför av två delar, dels en skriftlig rapport och dels en utställning. Genom att använda metoder för att tydliggöra den egna upplevelsen har jag satt samman resultatet av min upplevelse till en utställning.
Själva utställningen har visats vid två tillfällen en gång vid arbetsseminariet och sedan en gång vid examination. Det finns olika sätt att beskriva hur den yttre miljön upplevs i vårt inre, genom att beskriva miljöer och platser kan vi mentalt föreställa oss hur de ser ut och upplevs även då vi inte befinner oss i den. Jag använde mig av bild text och ljud för att förmedla min upplevelse av platserna.
Det finns flera aspekter om upplevelsen kring höga byggnader vilket krävde en tydlig avgränsning. Eftersom arbetet gäller en tät bebyggelse, låg fokus på det publika rummet, gatumiljön och ev. torg och andra platsbildningar. Resultatet av arbetet kommer utgick från min upplevelse av en plats och jag gick inte in på frågan hur man kan göra täta städer mer människovänliga, få in mer ljus osv. Jag konstaterade att byggnaderna fanns där och fokuserade på upplevelsen av det som fanns.
Vid mina besök konstaterade jag att jag vid flertalet tillfällen inte upplevde att byggnaderna var så höga som de faktiskt var när jag rörde mig runt dem. Begav jag mig iväg i området kunde jag däremot på uppleva höjden av byggnaden. Det var då jag, utan att behöva titta upp, kunde se högre än de första våningarna. När jag passerad eller rörde mig längs med byggnaden upplevde jag inte av byggnadens höjd, däremot påverkades jag i vissa fall av gatuvåningens skala. Skalan och variationen i området som helhet bidrog också till upplevelsen av platsen. En storskalig miljö bidrog till en upplevelse av en stor skala i sin helhet och därför också känslan av att husen var höga och stora. Mitt resultat redovisades genom foton och text under utställningen. Jag använde text och bild som komplement till varandra för att förtydliga vissa upplevelser.

There is an ongoing debate in Sweden about densification and the development of tall buildings. It is a discussion of our time, a time when urbanization is occurring in most countries. Urbanization creates a need for homes, as well as workplaces, while the supply of land in the cities is decreasing. Hence the planning of higher buildings. Tall buildings help to densify the city, which means that we are creating more homes and workplaces in a smaller footprint. However, there are counter-arguments as several characteristics of these buildings affect our street environment. We need to reflect about what happens at street level when building ever taller buildings. We need to reflect on how the city experienced by people passing through the area.
This work examines the environment surrounding three tall buildings to see if the building’s height affects the experience of place at street level. My goal with this work is to describe and analyze my experience of a place and then convey the experience in the form of an exhibition. This work consists of two part, an exhibition and a written report. The main results of the work are shown in an exhibition. The two parts of the work were undertaken in parallel. My goal with the exhibition was to convey my experience, but also attract and inspire visitors as well.
I documented the site visits in the form of photography, film, sketch and notes. To summarize my experience I made, based on my notes, a written description. After the site visit I processed the material and the documentation to clarify my experience of the place. The documentation was a way to convey the experience. I have answered the purpose by examining, experiencing and analyzing the site around three selected buildings in order to create a deeper understanding of how places are perceived and the factors that should be considered when densifying with tall buildings.
There are many more questions to consider in the discussion of tall buildings and densification. This work is limited to a visit to one city and to buildings where I had never been before. Since the work consists of a very dense development, the focus is on public space, the street environment and possible squares and secondary formations. The results of the work will be based on my experience of a place.
On my visit, I noted that I on several occasions did not feel that the buildings were so tall when I moved around them at street level. As I distanced myself from the buildings, I was able to experience the height of the buildings more. It was then that I could see more than the first floors without looking up. When I passed or moved along the building I did not feel the height, however, I was affected in some cases by the scale of the ground floor or the scale of the area as whole. My results are presented through photos and text for the exhibition. I used text and images to complement each other and to clarify certain experiences.
