Abstract

Historically, there is a very wide range of different forestry machines. Machines started to replace horses and humans in forestry just after the World War II. The first harvesting machines came to Sweden 1965 and the first machine that was produced in Sweden came 1966. The mechanization provided a high productivity increase in forestry. The single-grip harvester is currently the dominant harvesting machine, but its technical development has not been documented.
This study is an extensive literature study whose aim was to identify and compile technical specifications of single-grip harvester and harvester heads used in Sweden from its introduction 1981 until 2015 and to answer how these issues have developed; engine power in relation to the total weight, the crane lifting moment in relation to the total weight, average ground pressure, maximum felling diameter in relation to the weight of the harvesting head and the harvester heads feed speed.
The statistical results showed: the machine weight have a rising trend over time. The engine effect in comparison to the weight have also increased over time. Crane lifting torque per ton machine weight have been in a rising trend as function of machine weight for all single-grip harvester. Average ground pressure has increased over time. The calculated ground pressure are generally in agreement with the manufacturers specified ground pressure. The feed speed of the harvester heads have been in a rising trend over time. The harvester heads weight have a rising trend over time.
Practically applicable results: The harvester heads maximum felling diameter per kg harvester head is strongly affected by the harvester heads weight, and that can be used to predict the harvester heads maximum felling diameter per kg harvester head with the equation: y = 25.733x^(-0.547).
The development of single-grip harvesters and harvester heads statistically tend to move toward more powerful and heavier models. That have also lead to the increasing ground pressure. But the single-grip harvesters’ average ground pressure is still far below wheel forwarder´s average ground pressure.
