Abstract

I skrivande stund sker en stadsomvandling i Kiruna, där staden tvingas flytta till följd av gruvnäringens utbredning. I denna studie jämförs PO Hallmans vision för samhällets uppkomst år 1900 med White arkitekters vision för dagens stadsflytt. Detta utifrån anpassningen till platsens förutsättningar då det är en betydelsefull del i utformningen av en stad ur en landskapsarkitekts perspektiv. Därför jämförs visionerna ur de tre aspekterna utformning, placering i terrängen och klimat. Visionerna jämfördes med hjälp av strukturerade litteraturstudier. De tydligaste slutsatser som kan dras av jämförelsen är att båda visionerna anknyter till platsens förutsättningar, men på olika sätt. Hallmans vision genom att anpassa stadsstrukturen till terrängen, medan White arkitekters istället anknyter till omgivningen i stadens ytterkanter. Resultatet visade även att ingen av visionerna behandlade vinterklimat trots Kirunas nordliga läge. Det framkom också att det råder delade meningar om vad som låg till grund för gatustrukturen i Hallmans plan för Kiruna. Inga slutsatser har kunnat dras kring om det var terrängen eller vindförhållandena som i första hand tagits hänsyn till i utformningen. En likhet mellan visionerna är viljan om att skapa en sammanhållen stad med invånarna i fokus. Trots att Hallmans stadsplan för Kiruna är hyllad efterliknas den inte i White arkitekters vision, där istället hållbarhet är huvudfokus. Detta i enlighet med dagens stadsbyggnadsideal.

Kiruna is currently going through a series of major changes. The continuing expansion of the local mining industry is forcing the city to be moved. This study aims to compare the original vision for Kiruna of PO Hallman from the year 1900 with the vision of today produced by White Architects in relation to the citys relocation. This is being done based on how the visions takes the site conditions into consideration, since this from a landscape architectual point of view is a significant part of forming a city. Therefore the three aspects design, placement in terrain and climate is being compared between the two visions. The visions were compared through a structured literature study. The conclusions that can be made from the comparison is that both visions ties to the site conditions, but in different ways. Hallmans vision through adapting the citys structure to the terrain, Whites vision through adapting to the settings in the outskirts of the city. The results also show that none of the visions mentions winter climate despite Kiruna being placed in the far north. The study also shows that there are different views on what was the basis for how the streets where structured in Hallmans plan, some claims that it was the terrain whilst others would argue that it was the wind conditions.
One similarity between the visions is the will to create a coherent city with the citizens in focus. Although Hallmans plan being celebrated White Architects new city structure does not hold many similarities to it. White Architects vision instead, according to todays ideals of city planning, has sustainability as its main focus.
