Abstract

Det offentliga rummet utgör en viktig roll i staden. Det fungerar som stadens knutpunkt där mänskliga möten sker och kunskapsutbyten genereras. Det talas mycket om hur Gated Communities påverkar de boende i området men hur påverkas omgivningen, rättare sagt det offentliga rummet? Syftet med kandidatuppsatsen är att utreda Gated Communities och dess roll i stadsplaneringen i Sverige. Metoden omfattade en litteraturundersökning där dokumentgranskning utredde begreppet och dess roll i staden. Två platsbesök bidrog till analysen av konsekvenserna på det offentliga rummet. Litteraturstudien utgick från Jan Gehls kriterier om det offentliga rummet och Edward J. Blakely och Mary Gail Snyders teorier om Gated Communities. I resultatet sammanställdes undersökningen i en analys där vi ställde oss frågan; hur påverkar Gated Communities det offentliga rummet och stadslivet? I resultatdelen kom vi fram till direkta och indirekta konsekvenser av Gated Communities och genom platsbesöken såg vi att enskilda stadsbyggnadselement ger konsekvenser på det offentliga rummet. De slutsatser som dragits i arbetet är att Gated Communities förändrar uttrycket av det offentliga rummet där barriärer utgör kärnan till problem som segregation och klyftor mellan människor. Säkerhetsåtgärder som grindar och murar ger ett exkluderade uttryck på den offentliga miljön. Andra slutsatser är att Gated Communities utarmar staden på mänsklig aktivitet och skapar otrygghet i det offentliga rummet.

The public space has a significant role in the city. It serves as a node of the city in which human encounters and exchange of knowledge happens. There is a debate on what effect Gated Communities have on the residents and how it affects the surrounding. This essays purpose is to investigate Gated Communities and its role in urban planning in Sweden. The method covers a literature study where reviews of documents investigate the concept of Gated Communities and its role in the city. Two site visits contributes to the analysis of the consequences of the public space. The main literature for this study are Jan Gehl’s principles for the public space and Edward J. Blakely’s and Mary Gail Snyder’s theories on Gated Communities. The investigation resulted in an analysis where we asked ourselves how Gated Communities affect the public space and public life. The result complied both direct and indirect consequences of Gated Communities and by the site visits we saw specific urban elements giving consequences on the public space. The conclusions in the investigation are that Gated Communities change the expression on the public space where they become barriers that create problems like segregation. Safety measures like gates and walls gives an impression of exclusion in the public realm. Other conclusions are that Gated Communities impoverish the city on human activity and create insecurity in the public space.
