Abstract

In a time of densification of cities, the importance of green urban spaces increases. How green spaces is experienced depends on their design, but also on how people move through these areas. This study examines how different means of travel affect the experience of the surrounding landscape, during a recreational journey. The study was made along the recreational area “Årummet” in the city of Uppsala. The different means of travel that was tested were: to bike, to jog, to walk and to travel by wheelchair. The investigation was done following a modified version of the method ELA - Experiential Landscape Analysis. We, the authors of this work, investigated our experiences of surroundings by traveling along the river while registering our experiences. These were later summed up into maps, charts and notes. The qualitative results in the notes and maps, and the quantitative data in the charts was then analyzed and compared due to the different means of travel. The analysis was based on the components of the original ELA method, the different route choices and similarities among the means of travel. The study led to three important relationships. First, the study corresponds to Thwaites’ and Simkins’ theory that lower speeds leads to a greater amount of experience on a smaller scale. Our research also agrees with Gehl’s theory that pedestrians have a great sensory contact with their surroundings. Finally we state that our travel by wheelchair has more in common with biking when it comes to experience accessibility, but are more similar to walking when experiencing speed.
