Abstract

Over half of Sweden's land area is covered by productive forest. Clearcutting is the dominating harvesting system in Sweden. This system has faced much criticism due to the major disturbance in the environment that clearcutting causes, which threatens many species while at the same time creating a forest that is not regarded as aesthetically appealing. However, there are forest owners who have chosen to manage their forests without clearcutting but instead keeping the ground constantly covered with trees of different ages and that are practising selective harvesting. I have interviewed five persons who manage their forests without clearcutting, to explore what intentions they have with their forest properties and what motivates their choice to not clear cut. I describe in the paper how forest owners' bank-of-experience and bank-of-knowledge origins from their everyday relation with the forest and their information sharing with other people. I show that the forest owners argue that this is the most rational way to manage forests from an economic, environmental and social perspective. It is also the most rational since they act the way they do in-order-to achieve their planned goals.
