Abstract

I djurskyddsmyndighetens föreskrifter och allmänna råd om hästhållning kan man läsa att inredning inte får skada hästen. Men då det i dagsläget inte finns någon registrering på antalet skador orsakade av stallinredning är det svårt att säga vilken inredning som orsakar flest olyckor. Därifrån kom idén till detta examensarbete som består av en enkätstudie, djupintervjuer av hästägare som haft hästar som skadat sig på inredning samt intervjuer med tre veterinärer. Enkäten gjordes elektroniskt och publicerades via banner på tidningen Ridsports hemsida, via fyra avelsföreningars hemsidor och på Svensk galopps hemsida samt genom mailutskick. Med stallinredning syftas i detta arbete boxgaller, mellanväggar, fönster och täckeshängare. Syftet med arbetet är att få fram ett underlag för förebyggande av skador på häst orsakade av stallinredning och byggnadsdetaljer.
Totalt svarade 391 hästhållare med 12,1 hästplatser i snitt på enkäten. Tjugo procent av dem som svarat hade haft hästar som skadat sig på stallinredningen och 33 procent hade haft tillbud orsakat av stallinredning mellan 2002 och 2012. Av resultatet i enkätundersökningen kan man se att galler orsakar flest olyckor med 39 hästar, täckeshängare skadade 15 hästar och fönster 16 hästar. Det vanligaste var att hästen fastnade med benet/hoven i gallret. Den vanligaste skadan hästen fick av att fastna i gallret var skrubbsår. Fönster gav mest sårskador och täckeshängare gav flest käkskador. I djupintervjuerna fick hästägare som haft skadade hästar möjlighet att berätta mer ingående om hästens skada, hade skadan kunnat undvikas, daglig utevistelse etc. Av de 12 djupintervjuer som genomfördes var det olika typer av skadeorsaker som togs upp, bl. a. hade en häst rullat fast i boxen, fem hästar hade fastnat i gallret och en häst hade fastnat i mellanväggen. De flesta hästar klarade sig med mindre skador dock var det två hästar som fick avlivas på grund av sina skador.
Det var svårt för veterinärerna att specifikt säga vilken typ av skada hästen kunde få av de olika inredningsdetaljerna i stallet. Men generellt så ger skador av galler sårskador men kan även ge svårare skador på senor och ligament. Vanligaste orsaken till fraktur i underkäken är troligen när hästen fastnat med käken i täckeshängaren. Fönster ger i de flesta fall djupa sårskador. Konvalescenstiden för de olika skadorna varierar från några dagar till månader.
Man kan inte med säkerhet säga hur många olyckor stallinredning orsakar på hästar i Sverige. Utifrån min studie ser man att det händer olyckor av stallinredning, men det är bara ett fåtal hästar som skadas allvarligt.

In Animal Welfare Authority and general advice for keeping horses it is written that interior fitting should not cause injury of horses. At present, there is no registered number of injuries caused by stable interior; it is therefore difficult to describe which and if there is stable interior that causes accidents. This issue has been studied in this thesis and the information source consisted of a sur-vey, interviews with horse owners and interviews with three veterinarians. The survey was done electronically and posted at the horse magazine Ridsport’s website, at four breeding associations' websites, the Swedish gallops website and through email. Stable interior refers in this work as loose-box grid, box walls, windows and quilt hanger. The aim of this study is to develop a basis for prevention of injuries caused by the horse stables interior design and architectural details.
In total, 391 horse owners answered the survey, with an average of 12.1 horses. Twenty percent of the respondents have had horses, which injured themselves in the stable interior, and during the last ten years 33 percent had incidents caused by the stable interior. The result of this survey indicates that the grid causes most accidents with 39 horses, quilt hangers injured 15 horses and windows 16 horses. The most common incident was that the horse got stuck with the leg / hoof in the grid. The most common injury horses got out of being stuck in the grid were abrasions. Windows gave most wounds and quilt hanger gave the most gnathic damage. In the interviews of horse owners, who had horses that had been injured, were given an opportunity to go into detail about the horse’s injurys; if the damage could had been avoided, daily turnout, etc. Of the 12 interviews conducted, there were different types of damage causes raised. Among others, one horse had rolled down and got stuck in the box, five horses were stuck in the grid and one horse was stuck in the screen. Most horses sur-vived with minor injuries, however, there were two horses that were euthanized because of their injuries.
The interviewed veterinarians had difficulties to specify what kind of damage horses could get with various interior fittings in the stable. Generally, the grid gave abrasions, but could also cause severe damage to the tendons and ligaments. Most common cause of fracture of the mandible was probably when the horse got stuck with the jaw in the quilt hanger. Accidents caused by windows resulted in most cases to deep wounds. Convalescence duration of individual injurys was ranging from several days to months.
There is a lack of information in Sweden on how many accidents that are caused by stable interior. This study concluded that injuries can be caused by stable interior, but only few horses get badly injured. More research is needed in this area to give advice on how to prevent accidents caused by the interior.
