Abstract

Insulin is the most important anabolic signal molecule in the body and acts to promote glucose uptake into cellular stores and to lower the concentrations of glucose, amino acids and fatty acids in the blood. When insulin resistance occurs the uptake of glucose into the cells is reduced, which leads to increased blood glucose concentrations. Horses that are fed a diet rich in non-structural carbohydrates (NSC), with a high glycaemic index, show decreased insulin sensitivity. This is due to the large response of blood glucose and insulin that is caused by high amounts of NSC. A diet rich in fat and fibre has been shown to contribute to a normal glucose metabolism and should therefore replace a diet rich in sugar and starch for insulin resistant horses. Pony breeds have been shown to have lower sensitivity for insulin than horses of more refined breeds. This indicates that breed-related factors have an impact on the sensitivity to insulin. Insulin resistance may be involved in the metabolic disease laminitis. To mitigate or prevent insulin resistance a diet rich in sugar and starch should therefore be eliminated, and for the insulin resistant horse, forage with a low content of NSC is recommended.
