Abstract

Vad är kvalité i vår utemiljö? I många fall anses landskapets huvudsakliga kvaliteter ligga i dess visuella intryck. Men våra bestående minnen av ett landskap handlar sällan om enbart visuella kvaliteter, utan betydligt oftare om känslor och upplevelser som kan vara svåra att beskriva. Hur beskriver man till exempel känslan av att springa barfota i gräset, doften av skog, eller hur vinden griper tag i kroppen?
Idén till denna uppsats uppkom när jag, efter flera års studier på landskapsarkitektpro-grammet, fortfarande ansåg mig vara relativt okunnig i de meningsskapande kvaliteter som landskapet erbjuder människan genom andra sinnen än synen. För landskapsupplevelse hand-lar inte om enbart visuella intryck, utan om intryck från alla människans sinnen. Våra sinnen är det som kopplar ihop oss med omvärlden. Den mänskliga kroppen är inte en sluten enhet, utan i interaktionen med landskapet blir den en del av sin omgivning: en del av en större hel-het.
Begreppet sinnesupplevelser introducerades för mig som ett sätt att ta del av samtliga kva-liteter som landskapet erbjuder. Uppsatsen är skriven som ett examensarbete på masternivå för landskapsarkitektutbildningen vid SLU Alnarp. Arbetet med uppsatsen har öppnat upp mitt sätt att se på omvärlden, bland annat genom att jag har börjat lägga märke till kvaliteter i landskapet som tidigare har varit svåra att definiera.
Inledningsvis vill jag rikta ett varmt tack till min handledare Anna Jakobsson, för stort en-gagemang, ovärderlig feedback och inspirerande samtal, samt för att hon introducerade mig till ämnet. Tack även till min fantastiska familj och vänner för stöd inte bara under skrivpro-cessen, utan genom hela utbildningen. Och tack Johan, för ditt stora tålamod.

The concept of landscape is often associated with for example beautiful views or landscape architecture which focuses on the visual qualities of our outdoor environment. However, to experience landscapes does not only mean to stand back and observe the landscape, but to actually involve all our senses in the experience by physical interaction with the surroundings. Even if we are not always aware of the importance of all of our senses in the landscape expe-rience, landscapes are indeed something which involves our entire physical body. This thesis focuses on how the aspect of sensory experience affects our overall experience of landscapes, as well as the importance of these experiences in the context of understanding and interpreting the landscape. Initially, the thesis describes a historical view on the im-portance of the human body in relation to experiencing our environment, together with a presentation of the human senses and how they affect our perception of the world. Sensory experience is then described in a theoretical as well as a practical context. The theoretical con-text consists of three perspectives on landscape theory: philosophy/aesthetics, cultural geog-raphy and environmental psychology. Additionally, the thesis gives examples of how the im-portance of sensory experience can be explained within landscape theory, and how sensory experience has been used in different aspects of landscape architectural practice. Finally, the significance of sensory experience is discussed in connection to landscape ar-chitectural theory and practice, with focus on whether this perspective on landscape experi-ence should be put more to use as a tool for the landscape architect.
One of the most important conclusions made in this thesis is that the landscape experience seems to consist of both physical interaction and mental processes, which would suggest that sensory experience has an important role to play in the holistic experience of a landscape. It also suggests that the interpretation of sensory experiences is the key to how a landscape is perceived by people.
