Abstract

This thesis investigates how knowledge about system thinking
and ecosystem services can be used when designing a production landscape connected to district heating in the area of Elleholm, Karlshamn municipality. The development of resource efficient greenhouse systems in Elleholm was researched during a masters course called Energy Landscapes, in spring 2014. The goal of this work
is to provide a further deepened analysis of greenhouse development based in theory and using a landscape architectural outlook to give recommendations of development withing a defined area of Elleholm.
Theory about system thinking and ecosystem services was initially researched in a literature study and then applied on site, in a case study. The literature study shows that system thinking is based in scientific theories of systems, that has influenced multiple disciplines as well as inspired theory within the field of landscape architecture.
The landscape can be seen as a complex and open system with
multiple subsystems in many system levels. The concept of ecosystem services (the direct and indirect contribution of the ecosystem to the well being of humans) has been formulated in order to influence decision making to make it possible for the ecosystem to keep on providing ecosystem services to humans. Ecosystem services can be seen as components in a landscape system.
In the case study, theory about levels of landscape systems and ecosystem services was used to gain knowledge about systems within the project area in Elleholm. System levels were defined and researched by studying maps, doing field studies, interviews, literature studies and landscape analysis. The result was then used to formulate three concepts of development, where concept 1: ”Optimization and
increased resource efficiency in the existing production of food connected to district heating” is controlling 2 and 3. Concept 2 and 3 comprises development of greenhouses of two different scales within the boundaries of the project area. A general design proposal shows all of the concepts in function.
Finally the use of theory about system thinking and ecosystem services is discussed. The theory has provided a changed understanding of conditions in Elleholm as well as slightly different results compared to the conclusions drawn in the Energy Landscapes masters course.
The objectives and priorities of development are questioned. A delimitation of systems, interdisciplinary discussions and an investigation of multiple system levels has been important to gain knowledge in the thesis work. The conclusion is that knowledge about system thinking and ecosystem services can be used by analyzing system levels and subsystems in the landscape. The analysis has provided a broad perspective of the possibilities and limitations of the project area.
