Abstract

Soya is the most common protein feedstuff in poultry production in Sweden. Feeding with native protein feed instead of soya can make broiler production more sustainable. In Sweden the faba bean is an alternative to replace the soya, because it is rich in crude protein and the crop yields in Sweden have increased in recent years. Unfortunately faba bean contains antinutritional substances (ANS) i.e., tannins, trypsin inhibitors and lectins, that impair nutrient absorption in the broiler chicken. White flowered faba bean has a low content of tannins but contains trypsin inhibitors and lectins, which can have negative impact on the protein metabolism resulting in impaired production traits. To reduce the effect of trypsin inhibitors and lectins, the feed can be heated. However there may be a reduced availability of amino acids by heating the feed. Today, the exogenous feed enzymes xylanase and phytase are already used in feed for broiler chickens; therefore there is an interest in adding additional feed enzymes to make the crude protein and amino acids more available to broiler chickens. In this study the effect on the broiler chickens of adding protease to a feed with 20% white flowered faba bean was studied. Three dietary treatments were included in the experiment; a positive control group (positive) that had crude protein and amino acids according to requirement, a negative control group (negative) that had crude protein and amino acids below requirement and one group that was given the same diet as the negative control group but supplemented with protease and amylase (enzyme). The study included effects from feed enzymes on growth, feed intake, feed conversion, pancreas weight, liver weight, feces, foot health and carcass characteristics. No significant differences were observed between the negative and enzyme in any parameters in the study. The facts that the experiment was conducted at a research facility, as well as the diets were heated when pelleted and that protease was given in combination with other enzymes are some of the circumstances which may have had an impact on the result.
