Abstract

A behaviour study was performed as a part of a project where different leys are studied with the objective to find pasture species and varieties that are suitable on grazing surfaces subjected to extensive trampling. Behaviour observations were performed on heifers that were offered a choice of 4 different leys based on four different mixtures of seeds (A-D). The objective was to see if the heifers selected any of the leys more often when grazing. Leys A and B were established on a seed mixture with 10 % red fescue (Festuca Rubra), 35 % smooth meadow grass (Poa Pratensis) and 20 % white clover (Trifolium repens). Mixture A also contained 35 % perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) while mixture B contained 35 % tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb) instead. The seed mixtures for Leys C and D contained the same species, i.e. red fescue, smooth meadow grass and perennial ryegrass in the proportions, 12, 44 and 44 %, respectively but ley C was established with varieties recommended for fodder while the ley D was established with the same species but with varieties recommended for sport activities.
The aim with the study was to see if any of the leys A-D was preferred or avoided by the animals when grazing. Two independent replications (paddock 1 and 2), with four equal size leys A-D established within the paddock, were used. A total of 37 heifers of the breeds Swedish Red (SRB) and Swedish Holstein (SH) were used in the study that took place during the period May-September 2014. On six separate occasions over the pasture season the grazing behaviour of 7 - 10 heifers were observed during 2*5 hours morning (06-11 h) and afternoon (16-21 h) in each paddock. The behaviour of each heifer was registered every 10 minutes. The location of each heifer (ley A-D), the position (standing or lying) and the activity (grazing nor other) was registered. Measurement of herbage mass and sward height on 10 random quadrats within leys A-D was performed on 6 occasions over the grazing season to establish a regression between sward height and herbage mass. Measurements of sward height was performed before, and after each 5 h behavior observation to ensure that the herbage mass was sufficient in quantity to allow the animals a free choice between leys A-D without any restriction in herbage quantity. Sampling to determine nutrient content of the four leys A-D was performed in connection with each of the six observation occasions and botanical composition of the four swards A-D was performed two times, in early- and in mid- season. Statistical analysis was performed to determine if there were statistically significant differences in the time that the animals spent grazing on the four leys. The results showed that the animals spent significantly (p<0.01) more of their grazing time on swards A and B (32 and 27%) compared with swards C and D (approximately 20.5% on both). The difference in grazing time between swards A and B was also significant (p<0.01). During the observation sessions, the heifers spent 58% of the observed time grazing, 35% of the time lying down and 7% of their time doing other things.
The conclusion is that ley A seems to be preferred before the other swards and that B is preferred before C and D, indicating that the leys with clover were preferred before the pure grass swards. The ryegrass in sward A seems to be preferred before the tall fescue in sward B. No significant difference between the fodder ley C and the sport type D ley was found.
