Abstract

Global warming is a fact and the need for sustainable energy from a renewable resource is greater than ever. The Government's vision today is that Sweden will have a non-fossil vehicle fleet and sustainable resource efficient energy consumption with no net emissions of greenhouse gases before the year of 2030. Biogas is a renewable fuel that does not contribute to net greenhouse gas emissions and is thus an adequate substitute for fossil fuels.

The biogas market today is uncertain; this is because there is an interest among vehicle operators for biogas, but not yet the will to switch since the limited supply of biogas. At the same time potential biogas producers thinks that the demand for biogas is too low among vehicle operators to make an investment in a biogas plant. The possibilities for a viable biogas market exist but for the market to develop, supply and demand for biogas must increase joint from producer and consumer.

The purpose of this study is that from a business perspective to examine and elucidate the variables that have the greatest impact on the profitability of an investment in a biogas plant.

A sensitivity analysis was carried out with the help of an investment calculation in which the variables were price of energy crops and gas price evolution. The result showed how these variables clearly connects to the profitability of the biogas plant. The critical value for the price of energy crops for the biogas plant to be profitable was 396 SEK per ton when presuming a gas price evolution of 1 percent. Payback period is estimated to 15 years at the same gas price evolution and when the price of energy crops was assumed to be 330 SEK per ton. In the scenario analysis it is demonstrated that the connection to price of energy crops is less important as the gas price evolution rises.
