Abstract

Sweden today is heavily dependent on imported petroleum products for the running of the daily transports required for society to function. Abruptly increased prices for oil, or an interrupted international oil trade would have dire consequences for Sweden. Meanwhile, the Earth's changing climate and warmer temperatures lead to melting ice sheets, and this is largely because of the world's usage of fossil fuels.

This report outlines the economic aspects on biogas production for the Väster- and Norrbotten regions to be self-sufficient in fuel for road transport. This report investigates whether this would be possible with regard to the availability of raw materials for the biogas plants. The report also aims to illustrate the financial implications a shift to biogas would provide under current conditions and under varied conditions. To conduct the study, two biogas plants were analyzed by using the present value approach through investment calculations.

The results of the study show that:
• Biogas production through thermal gasification appears to be a good solution for energy supply in Västerbotten and Norrbotten. There's plenty of raw material for the manufacturing, and Investment estimates points towards very positive present values.
• For the commercial production of biogas through anaerobic digestion in Västerbotten and Norrbotten to reach profitability, rising fuel prices are required.
• The sensitivity analysis shows that production was also faring well under varying conditions. Biogas prodoction, regardless the manufacturing form will most likely play a major role as one of the energy solutions for replacing oil as primary fuel option.
• Economic calculations regarding thermal gasification is hard to get accurent, due to the lack of information in the subject. This is mostly because of the technology still being in an early phase, and few data has been released.
