Abstract

Companies need continuous information about the consumer’s preference to be able to devel-op their products according to market demands.

The purpose of this study is to examine how the consumer group Swedish students experience the feeling of different textile materials. In addition to this, the consumer beliefs about what environmental impact the production of different textile materials has, is collected.

The study was conducted through a tactile test where 30 test persons compared the tactile impression of eight different textiles where of five were Tillgänglig in four different samples; each of which had been subjected to a different amount of machine washings. This test was complemented with a survey which was answered by the same individuals conducting the test. The test persons sorted the samples in groups after what they experienced to be similar properties and graded these groups with a score. They also described the feeling in each group with a maximum of three adjectives.

Our result showed that the comfort decreased with the amount of machine washes the materi-al had gone through. This was true for all materials except for bamboo/elastane which also was the top rated material with a good margin. The test persons knew about the textile mate-rials which are highlighted in this report, with the exception of Tencel® (brand), lyocell and milk protein. They believed that the environmental of the production of raw materials were high for polyester, nylon, fleece and cotton while the production of raw materials for wool and milk protein were thought to be the materials with the smallest environmental impact.

The results may help companies that produce textile materials understand what properties are considered comfortable by consumers, which fabrics they think possess these properties and what environmental impact the production of raw materials for each material is believed to have.
