Abstract

Slakthusområdet i södra Stockholm står inför stora förändringar. Sten Nordin, ett borgarråd i Stockholms kommun, har gjort lösa löften till företag som IKEA och IKANO för att låta dem etablera sina varuhus, hotell och liknande i området.

I den här uppsatsen undersöks Jane Jacobs teori om stadsplanering och hur den kan appliceras på hur Slakthusområdet kan komma att utformas. Teorin innehåller fyra villkor: området måste ha mer än en primär funktion, det måste vara småskaligt och finkornigt bebyggt, en variation ska finnas i bebyggelsens ålder och utseende, och en tillräckligt hög koncentration av människor måste befinna sig på platsen under dygnets alla timmar. Enligt Jacobs måste alla fyra villkor uppfyllas för att området ska bli fullt funktionellt och levande.
Två analyser genomförs i undersökningen av området: en baserad på Kevin Lynchs metod och en baserad på SWOT-analys av Jane Jacobs teori.

Baserat på resultatet av analysen och vidare på Jane Jacobs teori tas ett program fram och ett exempel på Slakthusområdets utformning designas. Programmet innehåller fem punkter: Täta och tydliga kvarter, bevarande av delar av befintlig bebyggelse, hus som vetter mot gata, tydligare stråk genom området, fler bostäder, och fler entréer till området.

Arbetet avslutas med en diskussion huruvida Jane Jacobs teori är optimal för att basera riktiga projekt på och hur och om det är möjligt att komplimentera teorin med andra metoder och teorier. Slutsatsen blir att Jane Jacobs teori förmodligen skulle fungera, men att det skulle vara välgörande med andra metoder och teorier som komplement. Exempelvis tar inte Jacobs teori hänsyn till öppna och gröna ytor i staden, någonting som visat sig höja livskvaliteten för stadsbor.

Slakthusområdet, an old meatpacking district, in southern Stockholm is on the brink of large changes. Sten Nordin, a representant from the municipality of Stockholm, has made loose promises to corporations like IKEA and IKANO to allow them to raise shopping centres, hotels, and the like.

In this study Jane Jacobs’ theory of city planning is explored and applied to how Slakthusområdet could be developed. The theory contains four principles: that the district must have more than one primary function, it must be in a small scale and finely grained, a mix of buildings with different ages and aestetics, and that a large enough concentration of humans are present at all times. According to Jacobs all these four principles must be fulfilled for the district to be fully functional and vivacious.
Two methods are conducted in analysis of Slakthusområdet: one based on Kevin Lynch’s method and one based on a SWOT-analysis of Jane Jacobs’ theory.

Based on the results and even further on Jacobs theory, a design programme is derived and an example of how the masterplan of the Slakthusområdet could be developed designed. The design programme contains five points: dense and clear blocks, keeping parts of the existing buildings, buildings facing streets, clearer paths trough the district, more housing, more entrances to the district.
The study is concluded with a discussion if Jane Jacobs’ theory is optimal for basing real life projects on, and how and if it is possible to compliment the method described with other methods and theories. The conclusion is that Jacobs’ theory will probably work, but would go very well with other methods and theories. For example Jacobs’ theory neglects green and open spaces in the city, something that has been proven to improve quality of life for citizens.
