Abstract

Gräsrotsinitiativ är initiativ drivna av medborgare i civilsamhället för att åstadkomma lokala lösningar för en hållbar utveckling. De kan bidra till samhällsvinster i form av ökad medvetenhet och engagemang i hållbarhetsfrågor, stärka individer och samhällsaktörer samt generera färdigheter och kapacitet för att initiera hållbara lösningar i framtiden. Att förändra underifrån är förenat med utmaningar. Det finns ett glapp mellan kunskap och handling, och mellan individ- och samhällsnivåer som motverkar en hållbar utveckling.
Ett framgångsexempel inom hållbar omställning av lokalsamhället är Incredible Edible Todmorden (IET) i norra England. Genom att odla ätbara växter i det offentliga rummet har initiativet involverat hela lokalsamhället i en hållbar omställning. Vi fördjupar oss i initiativet vars modell anses ha stor potential för att stärka den ekologiska, sociala och ekonomiska hållbarheten.
Syftet med uppsatsen är att analysera gräsrotsinitiativens roll i en hållbar omställning av lokalsamhället, och diskutera möjligheterna för gräsrotsinitiativens inflytande över det offentliga rummet.
Uppsatsen baseras på en kvalitativ textanalys och intervjuer. Som metod används ett teoretiskt ramverk som visats användbart för att förklara gräsrotsinitiativs roll och kapacitet för att minska det ekologiska fotavtrycket i ett lokalsamhälle.
Resultat av IET:s roll i Todmordens hållbara omställning förklaras utifrån det teoretiska ramverkets fyra kapaciteter: personlig, kulturell, organisatorisk och infrastrukturell kapacitet. Det visade sig att alla kapaciteter påverkar varandra, vilket tyder på att även små initiativ kan ha en stor inverkan på lokalsamhällets hållbarhet.
Entusiastiska initiativtagare och volontärer som engagerat sig har genererat ökad medvetenhet om hållbarhetsfrågor i lokalsamhället. Det har i sin tur genererat ett ökat ansvarstagande. Samarbetet mellan olika aktörer såsom affärsverksamhet och kommun har bidragit till initiativets framgång och möjlighet att genomsyra hela lokalsamhället.
I intervjuresultatet framkommer att medborgarnas delaktighet är nödvändig för en behovsstyrd och hållbar utveckling. Intressekonflikter, bristande tid och resurser på individuell- och samhällsnivå, samt frånvaron av kultur i hållbarhetsdiskussionen ses som hinder för gräsrotsinitiativens inflytande över det offentliga rummet.
I den kombinerade analysen framkommer många likheter i resultaten, däribland vikten av kultur och samarbete för en hållbar omställning av lokalsamhället.
I slutet av uppsatsen diskuteras resultat och metod, varpå vi ger förslag på vidare forskning. Vi fann vår metod lärorik och uppsatsens resultat entydigt: att gräsrotsinitiativ har en essentiell roll i en hållbar omställning av lokalsamhället.

Grassroots initiatives are initiatives driven by citizens in civil society to provide local solutions for sustainable development. They can contribute to social benefits in terms of increased awareness and commitment to sustainability issues, as well as generating skills and capacity to initiate sustainable solutions in the future.
Changing from below is fraught with challenges. There is a gap between knowledge and action, and between individual and societal levels inconsistent with sustainable development.
A successful example of a sustainable transition of the local community is Incredible Edible Todmorden (IET) in England. By growing edible plants in the public domain, the initiative has engaged the whole community in a sustainable transition. We immerse ourselves in the initiative whose model is considered to have great potential to strengthen the ecological, social and economic sustainability.
The aim is to analyze the role of grassroots initiatives in a sustainable transition of the local community, and discuss grassroots initiatives possibilities for influence of public space.
The essay is based on a qualitative text analysis and interviews. The method is a theoretical framework which has been shown useful for explaining the role and capacity of grassroots initiatives to reduce the ecological footprint of a community.
Results of the role of IET in the sustainable transition of Todmorden is explained in terms of four capacities: personal, cultural, organizational and infrastructural. It appears that all of the capacities are affecting each other, which means that even small initiatives can have big impacts on the community. The enthusiastic founders of IET and the high number of volunteers has generated an increased awareness about sustainability issues in the community, and thereby also an increased feeling of shared responsibility. Collaboration between different actors such as business and municipality has contributed to the success of the initiative.
The interview result shows that public participation is necessary for a sustainable development. Conflicts of interest, lack of time and resources at the individual as well as the community level is seen as obstacles for the influence of grassroots initiatives in public space, combined with the absence of culture in the sustainability debate.
The combined analysis showed many similarities and a few differences in the results, including the importance of culture and cooperation for the sustainable transition of a community.
In the end of the essay we discuss results and method, and make a suggestion for further research. We found our method useful and the result unequivocally: grassroots initiatives have an essential role in the sustainable transition of a community.
