Abstract

This thesis presents a design proposal for a recreational landscape by the Western quarry in Slite, an 89 hectare wide and 45 meters deep quarry on the northern part of Gotland where limestone is being extracted for the
production of cement.

In the master plan of Region Gotland the limestone industry is being described as one of the primary industries of the island. However the industry often stands in conflict with several interests in nature conservation and there
are areas protected both for its values in nature and its values in materials and minerals.

In the surroundings of the Western quarry there are natural environments where several endangered species have been inventoried. The quarry and its environments of early succession has a potential of being a refuge for
endangered species that earlier has been benefited by cultivated land. In the year of 2021 the quarry has reached its endpoint and the existing restoration plan, with a focus on restoring habitats of the surrounding area, will be
fulfilled.

This thesis starts out in this complex and dynamic environment. An environment where the nature meets the industrial cultural landscape. The aim of the project is to develop a design proposal for the environment in a
limestone quarry and its surroundings. By making the site accessible and by designing hotspots, the experiences and biodiversity of the site is being put in focus.

By participating in the Quarry Life Award 2014, a competition to raise the knowledge about biodiversity in quarries, the project was given a thematic focus on biodiversity and how knowledge about it can be spread.
During the project, inventories and analyses has formed the basis for the methods that have been developed for the different parts of the project.

The site has been visited at two periods where the placeness, sightlines and accessibility was analysed. Interviews have being made with local authorities,
associations and companies. The theoretical specializations made in the thesis discuss biodiversity and restoration plans.

The design process starts out with a vision that has been formulated to create a direction for the project. The total mapping of the site results in nine places that is being selected as hotspots in the landscape.

These nine hotspots and how they can be made accessible is the foundation in the design of the recreational landscape. The result being presented in the thesis is a design where the cultural and natural landscape and the restoration
plan is being made accessible by adding paths, footbridges and hotspots. The quarry has inspired the design concept where geometrical shapes and material is being brought back to the site. The hotspots are designed to attract visitors
to the area and expand the experiences of the landscape. To inform about the biodiversity in the site, the objects are being placed in different biotopes and has been given a design that makes it easier to discover the endangered species in the site.

In the last part of the thesis the challenge in handling such a large site that always has, and still are, under a large impact of the human being, is being discussed. Biodiversity is being brought up as a wide subject which has been a challenge to use as a limitation or as a method. To design hotspots in the area to attract visitors to the landscape and inform them about the biodiversity in the site is described as a method presumed to succeed if the project is realized.

In this thesis handling a quarry and how it can be restored is breaking new ground. The new knowledge has being weaved together with a natural environment just as complex and through the design the public gets access to this new natural and cultural landscape with new aesthetic values and
experiences.
