Abstract
During an endurance riding competition the onset of metabolic disorders leading up to elimination from the race are common. As many as 8,7 % of the horses participating in international endurance riding competitions are eliminated due to metabolic causes such as tachycardia, absence of borborygmi, hyperthermia and dehydration.
To prevent the onset of metabolic disorders in the horse the rider must be able to determine the physiological and physical status of his or her horse. This requires good knowledge in nutrition, physiology and performance training. The risk of developing metabolic problems is reduced through the right feeding management and training. Research has shown that certain types of dietary fibers fed to horses can decrease the risk of dehydration, electrolyte depletion and fatigue. To prevent metabolic complications during the race the rider must make sure that the horse eats and drinks properly throughout the competition.
Dehydration and loss of electrolytes are the two primary causes preceding the occurrence of complications such as exhausted horse syndrome, colic, synchronous diaphragmatic flutter and acute renal failure, all of which can be deadly if left untreated. The main way of treating horses that develop metabolic disorders due to dehydration and loss of electrolytes is to restore homeostasis through rehydration and the supplementation of electrolytes. In mildly affected horses this can be achieved by voluntary intake of water and feed. If the horse is severely affected the need for intravenous administration of fluids are necessary.
To avoid the onset of metabolic problems and the need for veterinary treatment the rider must be responsive to the early signs of dehydration and fatigue in the horse in order to take the necessary preventive measures.
