Abstract

The cows’ movement in the barn between the feeding area, the resting area and the milking unit (MU) in an automatic milking system (AMS) is referred to as cow traffic. There are mainly three different types of cow traffic systems; Free, forced and selective cow traffic. Dairy farmers with AMS or automatic milking rotary (AMR) are dependent on cows that voluntarily visit the MU sufficiently to attain milking frequencies that are satisfactory but also to reduce the amount of cows that need to be fetched to milking. Different types of methods that can stimulate the cow traffic to the MU can achieve this. When the cow traffic is planned, it is important to consider that cows are herd animals with ranking order. It has been found that cows of low social rank often spend more time waiting in front of the MU than cows of high social rank. In experiments with forced cow traffic cows spend more time waiting than in free cow traffic. Waiting time affects the behavioral need of time for eating and laying down for cows of low social rank and it may also lead to lameness. Free cow traffic has been found to have a positive effect on feeding behavior and forage consumption. It has also been shown that waiting times in front of MU is lower in free cow traffic compared to forced and selective traffic. Therefore, Free cow traffic is the most preferable cow traffic system. However, milking frequencies in free cow traffic has not been shown to be as satisfactory as in controlled cow traffic. There is a possibility to attain satisfactory milking frequencies and at the same time reduce the amount of cows that need to be fetched by feeding the cows with different types of feed in the MU. AMR is a new system and most studies have been conducted on large-scale, pasture-based dairy production. Feeding cows with either concentrate or roughage in conjunction with AMR may be important to get the cows to frequently visit the AMR.
