Abstract

Decreasing request for traditional products from the forest industry combined with increasing request for non-fossil materials makes companies within the forest sector more interested in new product segments. Holmen New Business Development is a research and development division at the Swedish company Holmen that works with developing new products where wood can replace traditional alternatives. One of the possible products that the division is working on is the development of Wood Plastic Composites (WPC). WPC is a material made from a combination of a plastic matrix and wood filler. The material is given different attributes separated from the one of the pure plastic or wood material.
The purpose of this study was to find out what designers and product developers in different industries in Sweden think about the use of WPC in their own company and what development of WPC they wish to see in the future. 18 qualitative interviews were made with people from companies in the furniture-, kitchen-, window-, door-, fencing- and decking-business.

The study is based upon marketing and innovation theories which show in what way WPC producers can act to be successful with a product. For example the study does show companies willing to use WPC in their production today, which are companies who could be of interest for cooperating with the producer to make the products more successful. The study shows that low price, high resistance against for example wood-decay, moisture and mould and that the material is able to be processed in the same way as wood is the most preferred attributes from WPC in the future. The environmental aspect of a product is an attribute that the respondents think will be of higher importance in the future but nothing that the costumers are willing to pay for today. The respondents have in general got a positive attitude to WPC as a material in their future products but wish to see a development of the material, the producer and the market before using WPC in their product will become reality.
