Abstract

Det förefaller vanligt att Sveriges 362 700 hästar täckas och klipps men det finns inga studier som visar i vilken grad eller på vilka grunder det sker. En enkätundersökning publicerades online för att svara på det. Enkätundersökningen bestod av 41 frågor och hade en inledande del om respondentens bakgrund inom hästsporten, allmänt om hållning av häst och en del andra rutiner utöver frågorna om täckning och klippning. Täckningsfrågorna tog upp vid vilka årstider och väderförhållanden hästar täckas. Frågorna behandlade också på vilket sätt och vid vilka årstider hästar klipps samt orsaker till att täcka och klippa. Hur många täcken varje häst har av vilken typ togs också upp i frågorna och även hur mycket pengar de svarande lägger på täcken per år.
3686 av totalt 4727 enkätsvar har analyserats. Resultaten visade att hästar täckades i hög grad (91 %) och att de vanligaste orsakerna till att täcka var nederbörd (90 %) och kyla (80 %). Hästar klipptes också i hög grad (69 %) och den vanligaste orsaken till att klippa var för att hästen ska torka snabbare efter träning (63 %). Dessa resultat bekräftar hypotesen att svenska hästar täckas och klipps i stor utsträckning.

There are around 362 700 horses in Sweden and it is assumed that many of these horses are blanketed and clipped. However, there are no studies to confirm in what percentage or why these practices are performed. Therefore, a survey was developed and published online to answer this. The survey consisted of 41 questions and had an introductory part with background information about the respondents, their involvement in equestrian sports and general horse management. The questions about blanketing and clipping covered, for example, during which seasons and weather conditions horses usually wear blankets and get clipped. Furthermore, the questions covered how the horses’ coat is clipped and the reasoning behind blanketing and clipping. Questions also covered the number of blankets owned per horse, what kinds of blankets are used and how much money the respondents spend on blankets each year.
The answers from 3686 out of 4727 respondents had been analysed. The results showed that many horses are covered with blankets (90 %) and that the most common reasons for blanketing are precipitation (90 %) and cold (80 %). Horses are also clipped frequently (69 %) and the most common reason cited was to make sure that horses dry faster after training (63 %). These results confirm the hypothesis that many horses in Sweden are covered with blankets and get clipped.
