Abstract

The aim of this grauate work is to document and analyse the apple assortment present in the orchard of Grönhult, in the district of Vånga, as well as describe the historical development of the fruit farm and to discuss its future possibilities. Methods used are partly a field and analytical study and partly an interview and literature study.
Fruit farming has a very long tradition in the district of Vånga and can be traced back to the early Middle Ages when monks at Bäckaskog Abbey are assumed to have intruduced fruit growing to the area. The orchard of Grönhult is one of the oldest, larger, plantations in the district. Since the late 1950s has the orchard not been farmed professionally, yet reasonably well maintained, and still today there are a large number of fruit-bearing trees on the farm.
In Appendix 4 is a table of the 35 apple varieties that exist today on Grönhult. In this table it can be read from which country each variety originate, at which time they were introduced in Sweden, when the varieties ripen, which fruit color they have, and notes of the varieties, where, for instance their hardiness in Sweden is addressed. It is also shown which varieties that can be found in nursery catalogues from Alnarp Gardens from differente years and which varieties that are Swedish mandate varieties.
The conclusions drawn from this work is that the selection of apple varieties on Grönhult’s fruit farm during periods when the orchard was run professionally is rather consistent with the general recommendations during different time periods. There is an interest to restore and preserve the orchard and the assets of the farm fit well with the needs in the food and tourism sector, indicating a bright future for the orchard of Grönhult.
