Abstract

Companies working with forest harvesting have had low profitability for several decades. Therefore, it is important that they work cost effectively. Relocation of forestry machines between harvest areas is costly and the cost increases with increasing relocation distance.

The goal was to create a decision-making foundation for the company Södra to achieve shorter relocation distance and lower relocation costs. The study had three specific aims: to 1) identify forest machines relocation distances, 2) map working method when scheduling harvesting areas (route planning), and 3) calculate the relocation cost for a forest machine when using a tractor and trailer.

Relocation distances between harvesting areas were mapped within six business areas at Södra during the period from July to September in 2012 and July to September in 2013.

The used work method during route planning was mapped through qualitative interviews with the production managers and through process mapping. Analyses tested whether the method used had significance for relocation distances or accuracy in timber delivery (delivery precision).

The cost of the machine relocation with a tractor and trailer were calculated using theoretically assumed time required for loading, relocation and unloading of a forest machine at different distances. The calculation was compared with the Södra´s existing cost calculations for machine relocation under its own steam, and the truck trailer.

The average relocation distance was 13.6 km, the 50th percentile of relocation distances was 11 km and the 90th percentile was 30.1 km. No significant differences in average relocation distance between the business areas were found.

Three different working methods were used when route planning. The difference was the degree to which the route planning was centralized to the production leader, or decentralized to the forest inspectors and the machine operators. No differences in relocation distances or delivery precision between the working methods could be found.

Machine relocation with tractor and trailer was financially beneficial for distances between 0-15 km, if the options were that the machine is running under its own or by truck trailer with 30 minutes of waiting time. At Södra, relocation distances up to 15 km correspond to about 60% of the relocations.
