Abstract

Ruminal acidosis is a disease that occurs when the pH of the rumen falls under normal. The disease can be divided into acute- and subacute ruminal acidosis, depending on the level of pH reduction. Microorganisms in the rumen form volatile fatty acids (VFA) from carbohydrates. At a state of ruminal acidosis more VFA than normal is produced because of the high consumption of easily digestible carbohydrates (starch), mostly from concentrates. The result is a too large decline of the rumen pH. Concentrates doesn’t stimulate rumination and salivation, which is the cows own buffer system, since saliva contains substances of buffers. The content and structure of the feed affect pH of the rumen differently, depending on the content of digestible carbohydrates and particle size. Feed rations with a high proportion of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) benefit the environment in the rumen and does not implicate a decrease in pH. Acute ruminal acidosis has clear symptoms, such as dehydration, diarrhea and significantly reduced general condition of the cow. Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) can be difficult to detect, but reduced feed intake and lower fat content in the milk can be observed. There are several diseases that are related to ruminal acidosis, such as milk fat depression and laminitis. There are several kinds of measurements of pH in the rumen to diagnose ruminal acidosis. Some of these are economically and practically unavailable in conventional herds and therefore only used in scientific research. To prevent the disease a well composed diet and a good strategy of feeding are needed. To treat ruminal acidosis, a lowered proportion of concentrates is necessary.
