Abstract

In Sweden there is a legislative demand that farmers should let their cows out on pasture during 2 to 4 summer months. This isn’t always easy to achieve and fulfil practically on all dairy farms. Especially on farms with big herds careful planning regarding for instance cow traffic, walkways and provision of pastures is required. Not every farmer lets the cows out, nor does every farmer find it necessary letting cows from loose-housing systems out. Nevertheless, nine out of ten Swedish consumers consider cows to have the right to be let out on pasture during summer months.
In this literature study the influence of grazing on dairy cows is investigated; the benefits and disadvantages of grazing and how it effects on the animal health and production.
Is it of any benefit to the farmers letting the dairy cows out on pasture or might they just as well continue keeping them indoors all year round? Of course there are risks letting them out – during the grazing period there is an increased risk of goring injuries, and other traumatic injuries or accidents. Judging from the literature, though, a predominantly positive effect of grazing is seen on the health and welfare of the cows. The pasture is among other things providing a comfortable surface for the cows to stand and lie on which is favorable for the hoof health of the cows.
It has been showed that several of the positive health effects of grazing remain during the housing period, especially when it comes to hoof health. This means that the relatively short grazing period during summer affects the cows’ health in a positive way all year round. The length of the grazing period does however play a part. A longer grazing period has been seen giving less hoof diseases in total during the housing period compared to herds giving a shorter grazing period. A period of at least 85 days is needed for cows to recover from hoof diseases and lameness contracted during the housing period.
Several studies indicate that milk yield is reduced on pasture. This can among other things depend on a reduced net energy intake, that the habituation period to grass is too short, and that the cows’ need for energy increases with the increased movement while grazing. However milk quality is affected in a positive way – overall the fat-, protein-, and casein content of the milk increases. Furthermore, the concentration of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), a potent anticarcinogenic substance in milk fat, increases during grazing.
