Abstract

We present a new design of the Vassara square and park in the central parts of Gällivare, a town in northernmost Sweden. The design is based on the town’s existing identity. The design proposal is part of a thesis project in landscape architecture.

Gällivare is facing a great redesign due to the mining activities in the neighbouring town, Malmberget. The old parts of the mine are collapsing, creating an ever expanding hole that slowly engorges the town’s buildings and streets. Residential areas, schools, and other important community buildings will be lost and need to be rebuilt and relocated. To a large extent this will be done by increasing the proportion of built areas in the central parts of Gällivare, i.e., making it denser. As the town centre becomes denser, public spaces will be lost. This puts more pressure on the remaining spaces making it even more important that they are of high quality. This transition is a rare opportunity for both the region and the town of Gällivare to create an attractive and sustainable town centre.

The purpose of this thesis work is to propose a new design of the Vassara square and park that highlights the existing qualities of the site as well as expressing the character of Gällivare. Specific values characterizing the town were chosen as the main theme leading us throughout the design process. We found these values being: the nature, the mine, the northern climate, and the indigenous Sami culture. These values can all be embodied by Dundret, the mountain overlooking the town of Gällivare. Thus, Dundret was chosen as our design concept. Dundret can be seen from the site and therefore makes a strong connection between the urban town centre and the surrounding landscape. Our design proposal wishes to strengthen this connection. By using Dundret as the design concept we aim to reflect the values of the site.

The municipality is marketing itself through Gällivare, Malmberget and the mountain Dundret. Through our design proposal these three trademarks become more strongly connected to each other and concretized in the township of Gällivare. People living in the region have been highlighting the highly regarded natural and cultural values in the surroundings as positive aspects of living here. Our ambition has been to take care of these values and make them prominent also in the township.

“Dunder och flak” - what does it mean?
The project name “Dunder och flak” paraphrases the Swedish saying “dunder och brak”, meaning crash and bang. These are sounds you would expect from an explosion, referring to the mining industry. It also, obviously, refers to the mountain Dundret that rises south of Gällivare. Flak translates into platform or ice floe, a shape that have been used within the design.
