Abstract

Within the urban landscaping industry, there are many small players and a few larger (Ekelund et al. 2012). The Industries’ players are working with relatively large extent within the industries’ work frame which also affects other lines of business, and therefore the boundaries of urban landscaping industry seems unclear. Since there is no overall trade association, that brings together urban landscaping industry players on common issues, even the players seem unclear.
That there is no overall trade association, affects the urban landscaping industry’s players’ ability to exercise influence within the industry, such as the industry’s development. The individual players or smaller cooperation’s creates a smaller imprint, compared to a gathered industry against its surrounding world.
Swedish National Agency for Higher Vocational Education (MYH) made a severe erroneous estimate on the number of employees in the horticultural sector in 2010, which urban landscaping industry is part of, when they would determine the need of educational spots within the industry. In response, players from the urban landscaping industry joined with players from the horticultural sector and urban landscaping industry and made a new report to describe the horticultural sector and urban landscaping industry’s scope and importance (Ekelund et al. 2012). MYH's incorrect estimate may eventually come to influence the urban landscaping industry and it’s access to educated labor, therefore the players' ability to exercise influence, is an important factor for the future evolving of the industry.
This study provides a description of the urban landscaping industry by answering the questions:
 Who are the players of the urban landscaping industry?
 Which of the organizations’ interests are common?
 Which of the organizations interests are conflicting?
 What view has the urban landscaping industry’s players on increased cooperation within the organizations?
The questions were answered through a literature review and a survey with follow-up interview , which was answered by representatives from the following organizations : Association of the Swedish cemetery managers (FSK), the Swedish Association of Urban Gardeners (FSS), Landscape engineers' Federation (LIR), the Swedish Church Employer Organization (SKAO), Swedish cemeteries - and crematorium federation (SKKF), and Garden Coating were in Sweden (STAF).
The result shows that the representatives from the organizations have different experiences of urban landscaping industry and the cooperation which already exist. Also the results reveal different views on the need to unite the urban landscaping industry and its development to greater cooperation among many players.
By answering the questions, this study constitutes a foundation for continued discussion on how the industry’s joined players can affect the development of the urban landscaping industry, and how they together can create synergies and added value, such as equality- or size advantages.
