Abstract

Denna rapport är framtagen i samarbete med Ålands Hästsportförening r.f. med medel från Europeiska Regionalfonden samt externa finansiärer. Rapporten är en bred kartläggning över hästnäringen på Åland. Dess syfte är att utgöra en grund för beslutsfattande i frågor rörande näringen samt fungera som förprojektering till en eventuell multihall vid den befintliga hästsportanläggningen i Norrböle. Arbetet är även ett examensarbete i agronomprogrammet för Landsbygdsutveckling vid Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet, SLU i Uppsala.

Hästnäringen har en samhällsekonomisk betydelse för Åland och de kvalitativa värdena och ringeffekterna är många. Hästen är inte bara en hobbyverksamhet, utan bör betraktas ur ett större perspektiv. Näringen är mångfasetterad och indelad i flera olika discipliner. Många individer är engagerade såväl på ideell basis som i vinstdrivande syften. En förutsättning för att utvecklingen skall fortsätta i en positiv riktning är gränsöverskridande samarbeten, framtidstro och moderna lösningar.

Hästnäringen på Åland har vuxit enormt de senaste 20 åren. I motsats till tidigare uppgifter som dragdjur, transportör och även som en oumbärlig hjälp i krig fyller hästen helt andra funktioner för den moderna människan. Hästar skapar sysselsättning, används i olika sport- och tävlingssammanhang, i rehabiliteringssyfte och förgyller människors fritid – inte minst på landsbygden. Beteshagarna bidrar till ett öppet landskap. Liksom alla de vallar och sädesåkrar som årligen blir till vinterfoder åt hästarna. 500 - 600 ha åkermark krävs för att producera samtliga åländska hästars foderbehov om ca 7000 balar grovfoder. Ridning ökar i popularitet. I vårt grannland Sverige är ridning den största sporten bland flickor och den näst populäraste sporten totalt sett bland ungdomar. Trenden är densamma på Åland.

På Åland finns idag, 2013, en häst per 35 invånare. Studien visar att i de hästtätaste kommunerna är invånarantalet endast tio ggr större än antalet hästar. Det finns totalt 815 hästar fördelat på ca 390 hästägare. Varje hästägare har därmed i snitt 1,8 hästar. Största delen av utövarna är hobbyryttare och lägger ner 2-3 timmar om dagen på sin häst/sina hästar. Totalt lägger hästinnehavarna därmed ned tillsammans ca 1000 timmar dagligen på sina djur, vilket motsvarar 365 000 timmar på ett år. Ungefär 1000 personer uppger att de rider regelbundet, varav ca 430 på ridskola. Ridskolornas omsättning år 2012 var ca 400 000 euro. Travsporten är dock den disciplin där mest pengar omsätts, vilket beror på den relativt höga omsättningen i totalisatorspel. Den totala årliga omsättningen i den åländska hästnäringen beräknas vara 7,8 miljoner euro, varav varor och tjänster utgör ca två miljoner euro.

This report is produced in cooperation with the Ålands Hästsportförening rf, paid by the European Regional Fund and external funders. The report is a broad survey of the
horsebusiness in the Åland Islands. The purpose is to form a basis for decisions in issues concerning the business, as well as being a pre-planning for a possible "multipurpose-hall" at the existing racetrack in Norrböle. The study is also a thesis in the agronomy rural
development program at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU.

Horse industry has an economic impact on the Åland Islands. The qualitative values and it is additional effects are many. Owing a horse is not only a hobby, but should be considered from a broader perspective. The industry is multilateral and divided into many different disciplines.
Many individuals are engaged both on a voluntary basis as in for-profit purposes. An assumption for the positive progress to continue is interdisciplinary collaborations, belief in the future and modern solutions.

In Åland the horse business has grown enormously during the past 20 years. In contrary to previous tasks as draftanimals, carriers and also as an indispensable help in war, the horse has completely different functions today. The horse generates employment, is used for sport and
competition, for rehabilitation and to brighten people's leisure time - especially in rural areas.

Grazing pastures contribute to open up the landscape, as well as all the lays and cropfields, which yield is used as winter feeding stuff. 500-600 acreages of cropland are needed to produce the feed needs of 7000 bales of roughage. Riding has gained in popularity. In our neighbouring country Sweden riding is the biggest sport among girls and the second most popular sport overall among youth. The trend is the same in Åland.

Åland has today, in 2013, one horse at every 35th inhabitant. The study confirms that in the densest municipalities there is only ten times more people than horses. There is a total of 815 horses divided on 390 horse-owners. That makes an average of 1, 8 horses per owner. Most of the practitioners are hobby-riders and spend an average of 2-3 hours a day on their horse/horses. Totally the horse-owners spend about 1000 hours in a year, which corresponds to 365 000 hours a year. Approximately 1000 people state they are riding regularly. Of these 430 are taking riding-lessons. The riding schools sales the year of 2012 was about 400 000 euro.

Trotting is anyhow the discipline where most money is in circulation, what is explained by the relatively high turn-over of the totalizator game. The total annual turnover in the Åland horse industry is estimated to be 7.8 million, of which goods and services represents about two million euro.
