Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the Swedish horse keepers use of roughage. The Swedish Board of Agriculture made a survey during the spring 2011 called “Hästhållning I Sverige 2010”. In the survey, information was retrieved from groups of i) professional trainers of harness and thoroughbred racing, ii) riding schools and trail riding companies, and iii) private horse keepers from the whole country. The person that had the practical responsibility of the horse/horses on the property was regarded as a horse keeper and was asked to answer the questions in the survey. The survey resulted in a total of 2 038 answers from the three different groups, which gave a response frequency of 63 %.

The survey consisted of 36 different questions that concerned the horse keeper, the horse/horses, the horse keeping, the use of the horse, if the horse was included in some form of business operation etc. Questions about the use of different feed-stuffs were included under the questions about horse keeping. This master thesis is an additional analysis of the questions involving feed and feeding strategies in the survey. By comparing the responses on questions covering feedstuffs and feeding strategies with responses to other questions, and between the different groups, factors influencing the horse keeper in their choice of feed and feeding strategies could be eluded.

The use of different types of roughage differed between the three groups. Horse keepers of the whole country used hay instead of wrapped forages to a larger extent compared to professional trainers, riding schools and trail riding companies, which instead used wrapped forages to a larger extent than hay.

Horse keepers older than 65 years used hay to a larger extent compared to younger horse keepers. The horse keepers education level did not seem to affect the choice of roughage, but horse keepers with a horse-related education used wrapped forages to a larger extent than horse keepers without a horse-related education. When comparing the use of different roughage types between men and women, men used hay to a larger extent.

Horse keepers that had horses only within a business operation used wrapped forages in larger extent than hay compared to horse-keepers that had the horse only for leisure or a combination of leisure and business operation. Horse keepers that had the horse for leisure or a combination of leisure and business operation used a combination of hay and wrapped forages to a larger extent than the other two groups. Horse keepers that had cold-blood horses, pony-breeds or Icelandic horses in their business operation used a combination of hay and wrapped forages to a larger extent compared to horse keepers that had warm-blood and/or thoroughbred horses in their business operation.

It was more common that horse keepers that had their horses in loose housing systems fed their horses with wrapped forages instead of hay or a combination of hay and wrapped forages, compared to horse keepers that had their horses in a stable and/or in a loose housing system. Horse keepers that did not produce any roughage themselves used hay to a larger extent than horse keepers that produced parts of or the whole yearly requirement of roughage. The majority of the horse keepers that had one to ten horses on their property used hay to a larger extent than horse keepers that had more than ten horses on their property. Over 50 % of the Swedish horse keepers used concentrate such as cereals, manufactured feedstuffs and/or molassed sugar beet pulp while 8 % used feedstuffs rich in protein. The horse keepers could use one or several of the different concentrates.

Factors that affected the horse keepers’ choice of roughage was if the horse keeper had a business operation or not, type of horse, stable facility, if the horse keeper produced own forage, sex of the horse keeper and if the horse keeper had a horse related education or not. Other practical factors that may possibly affect the choice of roughage but that wasn´t investigated in this study could be: the amount of roughage needed per day, storage stability, access of space for storing the roughage, access and availability of different forages, and price of the roughage.
