Abstract

kallade livsstilsboendet i Malmö.

In today’s community people have, through media, become increasingly aware that the world is not always a safe place, which causes a sense of insecurity among many people. This notion of unsafe environments is a problem sometimes solved by constructing safer buildings. These changed building designs might have led to people in Sweden feeling safer now, year 2013, than before. Example of one attempt to remedy this insecurity is Victoria Park, the newly-built socalled lifestyle accommodation in Malmö. The idea is that the residents should get an opportunity for and sense of community, which is enabled by common and
private areas with high levels of service. Victoria Park has received mixed reviews.

The area has been commended for a strong community and safe housing for tenants, whereas, the housing contributes to seclusion and segregation. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the residents' perceived safety in the shaped
outdoor environments of Victoria Park. What were the thoughts of the landscape architects who participated in the design of the outdoor environments? Did they keep security and safety in mind and is it visible in the design? Do the residents feel safe there? This study is limited to Victoria Park in Malmö. To answers mentioned
questions, semi-structured interviews with residents within and outside in the vicinity of Victoria Park. In addition, an interview with the landscape architect, who helped designing the outdoor environments of Victoria Park, was made.

The interviews were made to see whether the landscape architect’s visions corresponded to the residents. Furthermore, this essay should comprise thoughts and
experiences that may be important in the building of similar housing solutions in the future. According to the results, residents in Victoria Park have very different
views on the posed questions. There was, however, one common factor; all residents thought of Victoria Park as a safe place. When designing, the landscape architects vision had no focus on security or safeness, which makes it differ from the residents understanding. To build more neighborhoods similar to Victoria Park was not considered as a problem, to the landscape architect, the residents,
however, had difficulties imagining that more could be established in Sweden.

Finally, the primary conclusion is that the creation of a sense of security for the residents in Victoria Park has been successful. Although the landscape architect does not think the security aspect is a central to the design, the residents’ feels that the private park is safe. It is difficult to know if it is the design that creates a sense of security. The ambition of this essay was to inspire the reader and to make clear that these issues are important to use in the design of future similar projects. A study of Victoria Park is interesting for both architects and town
planners, since they are responsible for the quality of the outdoor environments.
