Abstract

Fatty liver is a metabolic disorder that is strongly associated with negative energy balance in the cow. In severe cases fatty liver affects the liver's functions negatively, increases the risk of disease, reduces milk production and causes reproductive disorders. When the cow is in negative energy balance fatty acids are mobilized from adipose tissue to provide energy. The fatty acids are transported to the liver where they are oxidized. If the liver's capacity to oxidize fatty acids is exceeded fatty acids are esterified and triglycerides are re-formed which then can be transported out of the liver as very low density-lipoproteins (VLDL). However, the liver has limited capacity to secrete VLDLs and if this capacity is exceeded triglycerides are stored in the liver, causing fatty liver.

Dry matter intake is reduced prepartum, which contributes to the extent of the negative energy balance. It is therefore important as far as possible to maintain dry matter intake before calving, which can be done by increasing the total energy content of the diet. However, a diet with high energy content should not be fed throughout the dry period because it increases the risk of increased body condition in cows. High body condition is another major cause of fatty liver. A fat cow mobilizes greater amounts of fatty acids from adipose tissue, which increases the risk of fatty liver. A series of feed supplements has been evaluated as potential substances for preventing or treating fatty liver. Choline and propylene glycol are the supplements that are proven to have an effect on the concentration of fatty acids in plasma and the amount of accumulated triglycerides in the liver.
