Abstract

Cows like to go on pasture and when they do so they are more alert and the number of problem cows and deaths drop. Pasture can also give a good economy because it’s cheaper than feeding indoors and the cow are healthier. Many European farmers with automatic milking have the cows indoor because they don’t trust that the cows come in voluntarily to be milked. Many hours between milkings leads to lower milk production and a higher cell number. The reason for this problem is probably the motivation for milking is low compared with grazing or being with other cows. Good pasture gives more milk because the cows can eat even when they are outdoors. Cows increase their intake of grass when the farmers give new pasture. This motivation can be used when it’s time for the cow to go to the automatic milking unit if the farmer changes pasture often or has a selection unit that prevents the cow from going out when it’s time for milking. Feed offered indoors can be a resource to motivate cows to actively moves between the pasture and the barn. An experiment where cows with water only indoors were compared with cows had water both indoors and on pasture showed that water only indoors did not lead to more milkings. Long distances sometime leads to less frequent milking because cows synchronize their behavior and like to be with each other. This is the reason too many cows came to the barn at the same time and many cows come to the waiting area at the same time. When it’s happen it can be good ideas to temporarily extend the minimum milking interval so the important cows to be milked now, more easily can come to the automatic milking unit.
