Abstract

The aim of this study has been to review the literature available regarding prevention of sand colic in horses, and to create a consolidated view of how sand colic in horses can be prevented by the use of different feedstuffs and feeding practices. To avoid feeding off the ground in sandy regions is important in order to prevent the occurrence of sand colic. For horses kept in sandy paddocks and pastures, soil type alone is not considered as a risk factor for consumption of sand. It is rather the combination of sandy soils and pasture quality or feeding practice that represent the risk factor for consumption of sand in an environment with sandy soil. Various articles in the area suggest that feedstuffs such as psyllium and linseed have effect on sand removal from the gastrointestinal tract. Both psyllium seed and linseed form a mucus when soaked in water, increasing the bulk of the feed ration. The bulk of the feedstuff is assumed to contribute to increased intestinal motility. This would mean that it is the increased motility of the intestine that transports the sand rather than the feedstuff itself. Feeding of untreated linseed is quite inappropriate given their content of cyanogenic glycosides, which form hydrogen cyanide in contact with liquid. Neither psyllium seed nor by-products from linseed are toxic. Given this aspect, feeding these products could be recommended when considered necessary. What recommendations can be given to horse owners with horses that are kept on sandy pastures/paddocks and with an increased risk of sand colic? Based on the outcome of this literature study, the best option is to avoid feeding off the ground. Furthermore the owner of the horse should control that the amount of roughage given per day is suitable for the horse. In combination with these precautions feedstuffs associated with prevention of sand colic can be fed.
