Abstract

landskapsplanerat område i Västerbottens län.
mosaikartat skogslandskap.

It is generally be lieved that man
y types of non-productive forest land have not been affected by
mankind for a Iong period oftime and can therefore demonstrate Iong forest continuity. If so, they
may contain old trees as weil as snags and logs, elements that are important for preserving the
diversity of plants and animals. The aim of this study, assigned by AssiDomän Skog & Trä AB,
was to analyse the importance of non-productive forest land for biological diversity. This was
carried out as an inventory ofmires, outcrops of bedrock as weil as steep hillsides, within a
geographically defined and landscape-planned area in the county of Västerbotten. A number of
parameters such as basal area, distribution oftree species, amount of snags, logs and !arge
diameter trees, as weil as traces of human activity were registered.
The most common tree species was Scots pine and broad-leaved trees were more common than
Norway spruce on both mires and outcrops ofbedrock. The timber volume was low on the mires,
24 m3sk/ha, while it was relativelyhigh on the outcrops ofbedrock, 109 m3sk/ha. The trees were
of small diameter and the volume of large diameter trees was low. The volume was higher on the
outcrops of bedrock than on the mires. Old living broad-leaved trees are considered more
im portant than old living conifers. However, the majority of large diameter trees on non
productive forest land were Scots pines.
The occurrence of dead wood is a facto
r that influences the di
versity of many plants and animals.
The amount of dead wood was small on the non-productive forest land. There was more dead
wood per hectare on the outcrops of bedrock than on the mires. On
e large threat against wood
inhabiting organisms is that there is too little coarse dead wood from slow-grown trees. On the
non-productive forest land, the dead wood came from slow-grown trees with small diameters and
it was primarily pine. All dead wood with a diameter ofmore than 30 centimetres were
coniferous. Both on the mires and on the outcrops of
bedrock there was dead wood of all degrees
of decomposition. On the outcrops of bedrock the dead wood was decomposed to a higher degree
than on the mires. On the mires there were more snags than logs, while the condition was
reversed on the outcrops ofbedrock. In relation to the timber volume, the amount of dead wood
on non-productive forest land was high campared to studies carr
ied out on productive forest land.
In spi
te of the general opinion that non-productive forest land has been set as
ide from forestry for
a Iong period of time, traces of human activity were found on a high amount of the sample plots.
Stumps were the most common trace and were found on all of the sample plots on the outcrops of
bedrock. Ditches were also common on the mires. Seventy-eight percent of the sample plots on
the outcrops of bedrock had on
e or more fire scars, while the corresponding figure on mires was
fourteen percent.
Humans consequently affect non-productive forest land, conifers of small diameters dominate it
and the timber volume is low. The amount of dead wood is small, even though the amount is
relative ly large in comparison with the total timber volume. The value of non-productive forest
land for biological diversity is therefore limited. By means of ecologicallandscape planning, their
value can increase ifthey, tagether with edge zones, corridors, woodland key-habitats, protected
areas and increased nature conservation on the productian areas, are allowed to form a more
mosaic-like landscape.
