Abstract

Människans nära relation till träd genom historien har medfört att träd kan ha stor symbolisk betydelse och ofta tillskrivas emotionella värden. Enstaka träd kan framkalla en känsla av tillhörighet och identitet. Denna sociala aspekt på träd är i ljuset av tätare städer och ökande exploatering värd att ta till vara på och utveckla.
Ett sätt att göra det på är att använda sig av ett konstnärligt angreppssätt i arbetet med träd och konstformen trädskulptering är ett sådant. Den utövas genom
att stammar och grenar formas på träd för estetiska eller praktiska syften och förenar ekologi och konst på ett unikt sätt. Skräddarsydda träd kan tillföra offentliga
miljöer estetiska och sociala kvalitéer som inte går att uppnå på annat sätt. Syftet med detta arbete är att undersöka och presentera hur förutsättningarna för
att använda sig av skulpterade träd i gestaltningen av offentliga miljöer ser ut och sedan analysera hur förutsättningarna kan optimeras. Detta sker genom litteraturstudier och intervjuer med framträdande utövare av konstformen. Den övergripande ambitionen är att kartläggningen ska ge en överblick och tillhandahålla ett
underlag för landskapsarkitekter som vill använda sig av skulpterade träd i sitt gestaltningsarbete.

Man’s close relationship with trees through out history have made trees into keepers of symbolic significance and are often attributed with emotional values. Single trees can evoke feelings of belonging and identity. This social aspect of trees are in the light of our increasingly dense cities and exploitation worth protecting and expanding upon. One way of doing this is to choose an artistic approach when working with trees, and the art form tree shaping does exactly that. It is practiced by shaping the trunks and branches of trees for aesthetic or functional
purposes and unites art and ecology in a unique fashion. Tailored trees can add aesthetic and social values to public spaces that can’t be achieved in any other way. The purpose of this essay is to map out the conditions that exist for using shaped trees in a public environment and analyze how these conditions can be improved. This is done through the study of literature and interviews with prominent practitioners of the art form. The general ambition is to provide an overview and create a foundation for landscape architects and designers who want to use sculptured trees in the design of public environments.
