Abstract

Syftet med studien är att presentera olika begrepp med definitioner för
odefinierade rum i bebyggd miljö. Rum som blivit över eller bortglömda i
stadsplanering, övergivna och förfallna områden eller rum som saknar en känsla
av identitet. Olika författare med olika bakgrund presenterar olika begrepp och
definitioner för dessa rum. Genom litteraturstudier undersöks nio relevanta
begrepp från publicerad litteratur. De undersöks utifrån frågor som behandlar
författarens ursprung, verkets publiceringsår, begreppets definition, exempel som
ges på odefinierade rum, hur rummen uppkommit samt hur de enligt författaren
bör behandlas i planering. Begreppen som presenteras är: Loose Space, Lost
Space, Margin, Non-Place, Overskudslandskaber, Placelessness, Post-It City,
Terrain Vague och Urban Wildscape. Resultatet visar på två olika inriktningar. En
där författaren menar att rummet i sig och dess egenskaper är avgörande för dess
existens och en där människans interaktion och relation till rummet är det
avgörande. Resultatet visar även en koppling mellan en positiv syn hos
författaren, verkets publiceringsår och hur författaren anser att rummen kan
behandlas i planering. Några författare ser de odefinierade rummen som möjliga
att omformas med utgångspunkt i rummets befintliga struktur, något som visar på
dagens trend kring återanvändning, även inom andra områden. Andra författare
anser att odefinierade rum har stor betydelse för staden och för människan och ej
bör regleras eller kategoriseras för att de då riskerar att försvinna. De flesta
offentliga rum är idag planerade för att användas enligt vissa funktioner och det
finns inget utrymme för egna tolkningar. Alla begrepp och definitioner kan inte
appliceras överallt, då författarna har olika referensramar gällande både
profession och geografisk bakgrund. Studien ger ökad förståelse för olika
författares syn på odefinierade rum i bebyggd miljö.

The aim of the study is to present various concepts with definitions for the
undefined spaces in the built environment. Spaces which have been left over or
forgotten in city planning, abandoned and derelict areas or spaces with lack of
sense and identity. Various authors with different backgrounds use different
concepts and definitions for the undefined spaces. Through literature studies,
nine concepts, presented in published works are examined. They are analyzed
from a number of issues dealing with the author's origin, the release year of the
publication, the concepts definition, examples given of the undefined space, how
the spaces arose and how they according to the author should be dealt with in
planning. The present concepts are: Loose Space, Lost Space, Margin, Non-
Place, Overskudslandskaber, Placelessness, Post-It City, Terrain Vague and
Urban Wildscape. The result shows two main orientations. One in which the
author imply that the space itself and its properties are crucial for its existence,
and one where human interaction and relation to the spaces are crucial. The result
also shows a connection between the authors positive view, the release year of
the publication and how the space should be treated in planning. Some authors
look at the undefined spaces as opportunities for redesign on the basis of the
existing structure on the site, which demonstrates the current trends in recycling.
Other authors consider that the undefined spaces are very important for the city
and the people, and should not be controlled or categorized because of the risk of
disappearing. Most public spaces are currently planned to be used in certain
ways, there is no room for own interpretation. The concepts and definitions can
not be applied everywhere, because of the authors different reference relating to
professional and geographical backgrounds. This study provides greater
understanding of different authors approach to the undefined spaces in the built
environment.
