Abstract

Major changes have occurred in our society where globalization processes have brought together the nations and their economies. Market places have amalgamated into a single global marketplace and created a dependency between nations around the world. Decision-making is beginning to move from national to sub-national or supranational level, and within the cultural field, an international standardization of consumption and culture are starting to happen. The changed market conditions have created a competition between cities, which demands for constant innovation and continuous growth. Many cities in the West, have through industrial restructuring lost their function as well as their identity. With a focus on economic growth, urban politics have emerged where cities have taken charge of their own destiny. In this context, the concept of Brandscape has arisen. In a society where the importance of consumption and entertainment/experience industry are growing, cities are beginning to design centrally located places to attract capital, investors and people. I asking myself the question: How does the design of a city’s public spaces (urban landscape architecture) relate to the trend of identifting the city’s brand?
In order to understand the meaning of the concept Brandscape, I have looked closer at two places within the cities of Malmö and Manchester. This is to be able to make connections between theory and ”reality”. Sagolekplatsen in Malmö belongs to the city’s renowned investment in theme playgrounds and the city’s image as a Child and Youth City. In Manchester has Exchange Square in the middle of the city’s commercial centre been further investigated, assigned as a key place in the rebuilding of the city centre after the IRA bomb in 1996. The two cities’ industrial history and harsh set back of the industry repositioning have made them very interesting in their search for a new function and identity, where they have embraced the emerging urban politics, as well as driving forces and tendencies in the contemporary society.
