Abstract

Castration of male pigs in Sweden is done during the piglets first week in life and without
pain relief. This is a process that is done to avoid boar taint in meat from male pigs. The
European Union has suggested that from 2012 all castration on pigs without pain relief should
stop and that from 2018 all surgical castration should stop, under condition that some
practical problems have to be solved until then. Alternatives to today’s methods are therefore
a current question that needs to be solved. One of different available alternatives is
immunocastration. Immunocastration is done by vaccination against an endogenous hormone,
GnRH (Gonadotropin releasing hormone). This will inhibit testicular function and decrease
the levels of the boar taint compounds androstenone, skatol and indol.
This literature study is focused on how immunocastration affects the pigs out of a production
point of view, how it affects meat and fat content, behaviour, feed intake and other problems
that are discussed about the practical appliance of immunocastration in Sweden.
Immunocastrated pigs have a lower feed intake and at slaughter a higher meat content and
lower fat content than surgical castrated pigs. Immunocastration also efficiently decreases the
levels of boar taint compounds and has therefore a sufficient effect on prohibiting boar taint.
Immunocastrated pigs also show a lower frequency of sexual and aggressive behaviour than
intact male pigs and show no problems when being held in a group compared to surgical
castrated pigs. The better quality at slaughter and the lower feed costs compensates for the
higher cost of immunocastration. Hence, I conclude that immunocastration is a good
alternative to today’s method of castrating pigs both out of a production point of view and
also when considering animal welfare since it is less painful for the pig.
