Abstract

Jag har valt att göra ett gestaltningsförlag
för Brukets skidbacke och dess
omgivning i Görväln naturreservat i
Järfälla, Stockholm. Att se och tolka
en plats är grunden i detta arbete. Steg
nummer två är att utveckla platsens
förutsättningar och skapa en vision
för områdets framtid. Visionen är
slutresultatet av arbetet och syftar till
att ge nya idéer och inspirera till den
framtida utvecklingen av platsen.
SYFTE OCH MÅL
Syftet med arbetet är att undersöka och utveckla en
plats utifrån dess förutsättningar. Området ingår i
en större utredning av Järfälla kommun som syftar
till att utveckla platsen med tankar på rekreation
och tillgänglighet. Utredningen har skapat riktlinjer
för arbetet (se sid. 18). Utifrån detta formulerades
forskningsfrågan:
Hur kan Brukets skidbacke bli ett starkare landmärke
för området samtidigt som möjligheterna för
rekreation utvecklas?
Målet med arbetet är att skapa ett förslag som svarar
på forskningsfrågan. Resultatet är en vision för
en framtida utveckling av området. Gestaltningen
är konceptuell och tekniska lösningar är inte
inkluderade.
METOD
Arbetsprocessen utgår från olika insamlings-,
analys- och gestaltningsmetoder. Teoretiska källor
är inspiration och förebild till de val som skapat det
färdiga resultatet med visionen. Analysmetoderna
är baserade på upplevelsen av landskapet. Därför är
de baserade på Cullens (1961) sekvensanalys och
landskapskaraktärsanalysen LCA (Swanwick, 2002).
Analyserna leder fram till en problemformulering
för platsen. Problemformuleringen sammanfattar
resultatet av analyserna och bildar ett ramverk med
riktlinjer för den fortsatta gestaltningen.
PROBLEM OCH ÅTGÄRDER
Problemet med området är att möjligheterna för
rekreation inte utnyttjas till fullo. Området är
även svårt att orientera sig i och platsen är inte
tillräckligt känd utanför Järfälla. Åtgärderna
för att lösa problemformulering och ge svar på
forskningsfrågorna fokuseras till följande punkter:
• Tillgängliggöra mer yta av skidbacken
samt utveckla det till ett formstarkt
landmärke som annonserar platsen på håll.
• Återskapa den kulturhistoriska hagmarken
för att framhäva kulturlandskapet samt
Mälardalens sprickdalskaraktär.
• Utveckla entrén, gångsystemet och
förstärka siktlinjer mot Mälaren för att
främja tillgängligheten och cirkulationen
på området samt öka kontakten mellan
Bruket och Görväln slott.
VISION
Förslaget syftar till att lyfta fram platsens
landskapsmässiga kvalitéer samtidigt som nya uttryck
skapas. Bruketbacken blir med sitt nya uttryck
ett formstarkt landmärke som symboliserar det
innovativa Järfälla. Visionen fokuserar på upplevelsen
av landskapet. Möjligheterna för rekreation utökas
med nya skidnedfarter, ett utvecklat gångsystem
samt en öppen hagmark som framhäver landskapet.
Bruketbacken skapar kontrast till den omgivande
hagmarken och framhäver platsen på håll.
DISKUSSION
Visionen visar att Bruketbacken har alla möjligheter
att utvecklas till att bli ett formstarkt, och samtidigt
funktionellt, landmärke för Järfälla med ett
omgivande hagmarkslandskap. Resultatet för mitt
arbete svarar på forskningsfrågan, men skapar
samtidigt nya frågor. Tekniska lösningar och skötsel
av skidbacken är två viktiga aspekter som behöver
utredas vidare. Mina förhoppningar är att detta
arbete blir en vision för Järfälla kommun om hur
Bruketbacken och dess omgivning kan utvecklas i
framtiden.

What makes a place? How can landscape
architects explore and develop a place
to become something more? Which
decisions make the design become
eligible and true?
These were questions that influenced my
choice of subject to handle in my essay
for a master in landscape architecture
at SLU in Uppsala. The design process
has fascinated me during my entire
education. This project gave me the
opportunity to explore and come closer
to find the answer to my questions.
CONTEXT
The site for this master design project is a ski slope
and its surroundings in Görväln nature reserve in
the municipality of Järfälla, northeast of Stockholm.
The ski slope, Bruketbacken, is part of a major
territory in the reserve that is under an investigation
for development. The municipality wants to make
the area more accessible and develop recreational
opportunities. By accessible they focus on attract
people outside the community to discover the place
and exploit the recreational opportunities in the ski
slope and its surroundings. This influenced the aim
for this design project to create a new landmark of the
ski slope Bruketbacken.
The investigation has created guidelines for this
design project. However they are not strict rules,
rather footnotes to question and prioritize in creating
a vision for a new design of the area.
The site has historically been characterized by
Görväln slott. It is a castle that had its glory days
during the 15th century. During that time the
landscape were used for grazing sheep, thus an open
pasture landscape were created. The pasture gradually
become overgrown by covering forest and changed
the landscape character on the site. In the 21th
century only small signs tell the clues of its historical
background.
In the 1960s the ski slope was created, by clearing the
slightly inclined slope on the site. The ski slope was
increased in height in the 1990s.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The aim is to create a design for Bruket’s ski
slope that reinforces the area’s qualities, improve
recreational opportunities and increase the awareness
of the place from a distance. The challenge became
how to merge the functional aspect of skiing with the
aesthetic design of the new landmark.
My research question is, based on my aims, the
following: how can Bruket’s ski slope become a
unique landmark and intensify the recreational
opportunities in the area?
The issue is extensive and also includes the
availability and use throughout the year at the site.
The design should also relate to the nature reserve’s
surroundings.
The design is delimited to become a vision for the
area. Details and technical solutions are therefore not
included in this work. The results are meant to serve
as a tool in the developing of the area and to give an
innovative design for the ski slope.
METHOD
The method to reach the result of this thesis has been
the creative process that follows a design project.
Literature studies, inventory, analysis, sketching,
inspiration, precedents and dialogue with experts
in the field are part of this project, yet also my own
reflections on the collected material.
The methods of inventory were chosen to provide
data for the analysis. To perform the analysis, I
needed to know the place, the whole and its various
parts. I chose to focus on how the landscape is
perceived by people. Therefore I chose to do a
sequence analysis and a character analysis on the
area. The sequence analysis is based on Cullen’s
(1961) thoughts on the experience of an urban
landscape.

Cullen methodically describes how you move
through a city environment and the impression given,
depending on the spatial transitions and focal points.
I adapted the method on the undulating landscape
of the site. Cullen’s principles set up guidelines in
describing the different experiences that was given
walking through the landscape.
PROSPECTS FOR DEVELOPMENT
The landscape character analysis is inspired of the
English method Landscape character assessment
(Swanwick, 2002). The method aims to describe the
landscape character of a specific site. Based on the
results of the two analysis prospects for development
were set up.
The main issues of the area are that the opportunities
for recreation are not fully utilized. Also the road
system is limited which make it difficult to orientate
and the area are not sufficiently known
outside the municipality of Järfälla.
The prospects for development are, based on the
problems, following:
• Make more surface of the ski slope accessible
• Develop the walking road system and create alternative routes
• Create viewing points and places for rest
• Open up line of sights towards the water and
the ski slope
• Strengthen the connection between the two
neighboring areas Bruket and Görväln slott
• Develop the entrance to the area
• Develop a unique shape of the ski slope to
create a contrasting landmark for the area
• Re-create the historic character of pastures
to the strengthen the cultural landscape and
the rift valley that characterise Mälardalen.
VISION
The concept is the idea behind the proposal. It aims to
explain the thoughts behind the result. The idea is to
enhance the landscape character and create a strong
landmark which highlights the area.
The proposal is divided into two ideas that come
together in one complete solution. It is partly to
reinforce the cultural landscape, and partly to
reinforce the artificial landscape with the landmark.
This is done by recreating the historical pasture
landscape and creating a stronger landmark with
the ski slope. The pasture landscape opens up
and clarifies Mälardalen’s rift valley and make it
accessible to the visitor. Lines of sight towards the
water are reinforced, which increases the contact with
the water. In contrast the landmark’s new form creates
an eye-catcher that advertises the site on a distance.
The new landmark of the ski slope symbolises
dynamism and movement. The shape of the landmark
enhances the experience of rift valley landscape.
It is based on the idea of one concave and one
convex side. The concave side of the slope is facing
inward and down towards the valley. It symbolizes
the perception of security. In the valley, you are
protected. The convex side, with the spiraling
slopes, is directed outwards to the infinite views of
the water and the landscape. Here, the experience
is the opposite of the security in the valley. You are
fully exposed to the water and placed in front of the
endless view to the horizon.
By opening up the landscape, new views towards the
water are created, but also between the two areas,
the ski slope Bruketbacken and Görväln slott. The
concept enhances the experience of the landscape and
highlights the nearness to the water. Availability and
ease of orientation also increases the understanding of
the landscape.
