Abstract

Detta är ett examensarbete inom ämnet landskapsarkitektur. Arbetet är ett gestaltningsförslag för en askgravlund på Skogskyrkogården i Stockholm.

Syftet med examensarbetet är att göra en gestaltning och att arbeta med ett känslokoncept. Det vill säga att gestalta med avsikt att skapa en viss sinnesstämning hos besökaren. Förslaget har gått ut på att skapa en helhet som genom sin utformning förmedlar känslorna fridfull och omfamnande. Avsikten är att skapa ett förslag som fungerar med många människors åsikt om vad en bra begravningsplats och utemiljö är och att förstärka detta genom att förmedla dessa specifika känslor till dem som besöker askgravlunden.

Utgångspunkten i examensarbetet är ett uppdrag från Kyrkogårdsförvaltningen i Stockholm stad. Uppdraget går ut på att göra ett gestaltningsförslag för Kvarter 25b på Skogskyrkogården. Förslaget ska innehålla en askgravlund, askgravplatser, en damm dit den fridlysta större vattensalamandern kan sprida sig och platsen ska tillgänglighetsanpassas. Utifrån uppdraget formulerades en huvudfråga. Arbetet och dess gestaltningsförslag går ut på att besvara följande:
- Hur kan Kvarter 25b på Skogskyrkogården gestaltas så att det blir en attraktiv plats med askgravlund, askgravplatser samt en damm som fungerar för större vattensalamander?

Målet med arbetet är att presentera ett förslag som är verklighetsanknutet och därmed till nytta för Kyrkogårdsförvaltningen i Stockholm och andra som kan ha intresse av arbetet. Med det menas att gestaltningsförslaget ska resultera i god funktion, god hållbarhet och en estetiskt tilltalande miljö som därmed genererar en plats som är attraktiv för framtida besökare.

Kvarter 25b är en del av Skogskyrkogården i Stockholm. Den skiljer sig från begravningsplatsen både i topografi och i natur då den är en sänka med orörd naturmark. Det är viktigt att förstå platsens, omgivningen och sammanhanget mellan dem. På så sätt kan den nya gestaltningen passa in i Skogskyrkogården och dess harmoni med fina samspel mellan byggnader och natur. Begravningsplatsen är världskänd, den finns med på Unescos världsarvslista och är ett populärt
besöksmål. Kvarter 25b är relativt litet och ligger i utkanten av den stora begravningsplatsen. I likhet med andra skogskyrkogårdar har den naturen och skogen som huvudupplevelse.

De två känslor som använts som koncept till gestaltningsförslagets är fridfull och omfamnande. Dessa
två sinnestämningar passar bra in med att en begravningsplats bör vara ett ställe där besökare ska
ges möjlighet att sörja, minnas och påminnas om livets gång. Fridfull representerar en lugn plats för eftertanke. Fridfull är även en rogivande plats med en sinnesstämning som passar för de dödas sista vila. Omfamnande hjälper de besökande att känna trygghet och en intimitet på platsen. Att känna sig omfamnad kan dessutom innebära att känna sig omhändertagen av naturen. Naturen bör ha en framträdande roll eftersom den ofta fungerar som ett viktigt stöd i sorgearbetet.

Metoden som använts är att arbeta efter begreppen inventering, analys och förslag. I begreppet förslag
ingår flera olika moment så som skissande, fakta, konceptformulering, gestaltningsprogram och
gestaltningsförslag. Skissandet har prioriterats för att låta skapandet vara med från början till slut. För
att inte fastna i sökande efter fakta så har frågeställningarna behandlats först efter att frågorna har
dykt upp. På så sätt har arbetet inriktats mot skapande och att med gestaltningen försöka ge ett svar på arbetets problemformulering. I gestaltningsprogrammet sammanställdes kraven från uppdragsgivaren, analysen, det valda känslokonceptet och olika slutsatser.

Förslaget kallas – Att vila i naturen. Idén är att låta naturen vara tongivande för gestaltningen och låta den visa livets gång. Askgravlunden kan beskrivas som att våra döda vilar under trädens kronor men är även en plats för de levande. I förslaget bevaras merparten träd och större delen av naturmarken. Askgravlunden blir basen för att skapa en helhet. Inom askgravlunden placeras askgravplatserna, dammen och de övriga beståndsdelarna som krävs för att området ska fylla sin funktion. Det är
alltså askgravlunden som binder ihop Kvarter 25b. De övriga elementen blir en del av denna helhet. Konceptet med känslorna fridfull och omfamnande återspeglas i många av förslagets olika delar. Naturen är för många en rogivande plats där vi finner stöd. För att skapa en fridfull plats har förslaget ett enkelt formspråk med få detaljer. Genomgående är det mjuka linjer och lugna, naturliga färger. I förslaget bevaras och förstärks rumsligheten vilken är tydligt omfamnande. Platsen sluter sig runt den
som vistas inom askgravlunden och samtidigt finns det utblickar mot omgivningen för att skapa en känsla av trygghet. Idén med förslaget är att askgravlunden ska tilltala besökare både estetiskt och i sitt budskap.

This is a degree project within the topic of Landscape Architecture. It is a design proposal to found a new burial site at the Woodland Cemetery in Stockholm. The thesis has been carried out at the Department of Urban and Rural Development at SLU, Ultuna and in collaboration with the Cemetery administration of Stockholm.

The purpose of the degree project is to work with a design that incorporates an emotional concept and thereby try to affect the visitors state of mind. This proposal’s aim has been to create a place that through its design can mediate a sense of being embraced and in serenity. By incorporating these two emotions in the design the site acts as the messenger and the visitor being the receiver. The intention
is that the emotional concept heightens the experience when visiting the place. The whole is important in the design and the goal is that the concept goes hand in hand with what people expect of a pleasing burial site.

Starting point for this thesis is an assignment from the Cemetery administration of Stockholm. The mission is to deliver a design proposal for a site called Area 25b at the Woodland Cemetery in Stockholm. The project includes an ash burial grove and a place for urn burial. The cemetery is today a home for the rare and protected Great Crested Newt of the Salamandridae family. The proposal therefore also includes a pond to ensure that the newt will be able to increase and disperse by keeping its natural habitat. The main issue of this thesis is to answer the following question:
- How can the design make sure that it will be an appealing place that includes both an ash burial site, an urn burial and also a pond that will attract the larger newt?

The goal for this work is to present an idea that is based on reality and thereby useful for the Cemetery administration of Stockholm and other whom might have interest in this study. The result of the design proposal is to make sure it will function with a reliable durability and an appealing aesthetic surrounding that will attract future visitors. The Woodland Cemetery in Stockholm is on the UNESCO World heritage list and well known all over
the world and therefore also a popular tourist attraction. Similar to other woodland cemeteries the one in Stockholm focuses on the forest and nature as the main experience. The size of Area 25b is relative small and the position is at the outside edge of the cemetery. The place stands out from the rest of the surroundings in the cemetery’s landscape and topography by being a place with a lower valley of virgin nature. It is important to grasp the site and the surroundings to make a connection between them so
that the new design will blend with the landscape that represents the Woodland Cemetery today. But it is also important to form a place that is unique and makes it stand out in the grand cemetery.

The method used was to work with concepts of inventory, analysis and proposal. The concept of proposal included several different parts such as sketching, collecting facts, formulating concepts, formation and design suggestions. The process of sketching has been a main priority from start to finish and in the search for facts and information questions at issue has been dealt with along the way. That way it was possible to concentrate on producing and through the design try to answer the
enunciation of the work. All the requirements in the assignment from the cemetery administration,
analysis, emotion concept and all the conclusions were compiled with the following:
• To shape and design an ash burial site with appealing emotional aesthetics
• To form a place that is unique and makes it stand out in the grand cemetery
• To create affinity and bound the area to the surroundings of the woodland cemetery
• To capture emotions of peacefulness and embracing
• To preserve most natural areas and trees and let nature become the main attraction
• To exploit landscape conditions, topography and surroundings of dense and sparse forest
• To present the cycle of nature during different seasons
• To make the solid elements show that the area contains more than untouched land
• To show that the area is considered precious and cared for through the materials used in the design
• To keep and increase the area’s spatiality
• To use a simple design with calm colors together with delicate contrasts
• To present the area with a positive atmosphere
• To build a silent place with sounds of nature
• To design appealing entrances
• To create opportunities to stay at the site but also pass by without stopping
• To tie the area to cemetery’s buildings such as the Chapel of resurrection and nearby walkways
• To simplify access to the area from parking spaces and bus stops
• To found an ash burial grove that works throughout all seasons

The proposal applies an emotional concept using the emotions of embracing and peacefulness as a state of mind that fit in to the concept of a cemetery. A cemetery is a place where the visitor can get the opportunity to mourn, remember and be reminded of the wheel of time. Peacefulness in its meaning represents a place for reflection and a place to relax both mentally and physically. It is also a place where the deceased rest in peace. By embracing the visitor through the design, the idea is to make the
visitors feel safe and secure but also make them feel close to the place where their loved ones now lay. Mourning goes through different stages and the scenery where it takes place has a great impact on the visitor. The idea for Area 25b at the woodland cemetery in Stockholm is to make the visitor feel embraced by nature.

The proposal is named – Embraced by nature - the aim is to make nature be the guide throughout the design and have it show the course of life. An ash burial site lets our deceased rest underneath while the living have a place to mourn, find peace and harmony where sorrow meets life beneath the tree tops. In the proposal most of the trees and natural areas are preserved. The ash burial will be the foundation in creating a whole of Area 25b, the other elements will be part of making it complete. Working with an emotion concept where peacefulness and an embracing impression is captured and reflected in many parts of the proposal. To many people nature is a place where they find comfort as well as relaxation and serenity. In order to shape and design a peaceful spot the proposal works with
a simple idiom with few details that say “less is more”, using soft lines and natural calm colors. The idea is that the ash burial closes around the visitor but still with sight of the surrounding, in sense of the visitor being embraced and feeling safe. The idea of the design is to attract the visitor to Area 25b through a message of aesthetic ambiance and by preserving and intensifying the hold of the area. This is a place where you are embraced by nature.
