Abstract

Many breeders have their own goal with their breeding, their own specialization, for example show-jumping or dressage. Most of them want to breed international competitive horses with good exterior, and sustainability, horses that will preform well at competitions. The breeding evaluations of three and four year old horses and youthstock competitions, are where we try to establish the use, and capability, and performance as a competition individual.
The horses have many traits that can be both pro and con depending on the purpose of the horse. What is it that determines a good jumper?
This study is based on the following questions. What traits are the judges and trainers considering to be important for a good jumper? Which angles are important for a good front- and hind-legs technique? Is there some kind of consensus among our judges and trainers considering youngstock evaluations?
The study has been directed towards youthstock judges and A-trainers in jumping, in Sweden. They all answered an survey containing five questions concerning the horses properties, which angels are crucial both for front and hind legs, how … in percentage they give to each evaluation step during his or her evaluation, and five film sequencers to evaluate. Where as they should determine a grade from one to ten on the over all technique, one grade for the front legs techniques and one for the hind legs.
The study contained four geldings and one mare in the age range of six to twelve, and all were evaluated considering their ability to compete. All horses were evaluated while ridden and the evaluation sequence was from a straight fence with three cantering leaps facing a twofold fence, which was the evaluation fence. The answering frequency in this study was 29% and answering the first six questions were 47%.
Traits that they first of all are looking for within a jumper, are the scoop, a good confidence, and a high intelligence. Also high rideability is important for the performance. A repetitive opinion is that without the right attitude the horse does not perform well whether or not it has good exterior. The front legs technique is easier to define than the hind legs technique. Considering the evaluations of the film sequencers the study shows a wide spread in evaluating the jump. The ratings difference up to four points among the horses and judging groups. Also the rider has a big influence in whether or not the horse is going to perform well, the rider influence the horse both positive and negative.
The study concludes that there are differences between the judges and trainers when it comes to evaluate the optimal jumper. Mostly this depend on that different persons consider different properties to be more or less important. Consensus among Swedish youthstock judges is weak. Maybe the most important and agreeable properties among the questioned judges and trainers are the horse's attitude and the basic education to produce an optimal jumper.
